Programs
A.. Storytime: 15 Library sponsored storytimes were held during the month of October. 279 children attended
October's storytimes accompanied by 95 adults. The average attendance per session was 19 children and
6 adults.
B. Teen Read Week: The Children's Department participated in ALA's Teen Read Week promotion
(October 17 -23). 26 teen grades (6-12) answered the question "lf l was stranded on a deserted island, what
book would I like to read". These twenty-six teens became eligible for a County-wide drawing held October
27. David Hoch from Columbia Heights won a Timberwolves jersey and book.
C. Author Appearance: Local author Michael Dahl introduced the mystery genre to 22 teens and 3 adults on
October 19. Michael involved the group in investigating clues, deciphering evidence, and establishing alibis.
At the close of the session, all teens participated in a forensic experiment to provide conclusive evidence as
to who defaced Jesse Ventura's portrait at the Governor's Mansion. Participants expressed delight at the
program.
D. Field Trips: Three groups from ECFE and two from Headstart visited the Library this month. Each group
participated in storytime, received their first library card and checked out their very own book.
E. Motheread/Fatheread: Children's Librarian Marsha Tubbs, provided the introductory program for
Motheread/Fatheread at North Park Elementary School. School district representatives had requested
information on Library services with emphasis on the importance of reading and some demonstration of
storytelling/reading aloud techniques. Marsha read Bubba the cowboy prince, and told the story Sam's
sandwich. 18 children and 28 adults attended the program. A special thank you to Judy Yantos and School
District 13 for reimbursing the City for the staff time to replace Marsha's time spent on this program.

Projects
A. Grants: on October 11, Columbia Heights City Council officially accepted from the State of Minnesota CHASE
grant funds for the years of 1999-2001. The Library joined with the Recreation Department, Police
Department, School District 13, YMCA, and others as a collaborative applicant for this grant. As a result, the
Library will receive grant funds for additional programming over the next two years. The exact amount of the
funding is unknown at this time. We are awaiting official budget notification from the State of Minnesota.
Michael Dahl's visit during Teen Read Week was provided through CHASE grant funds.
B. The Children's Department processed the first bulk loans to schools this month and delivered them on
October 7. Delivery and selection went smoothly. Reports from the teachers and classes have been positive.
IV Staff
A.
MAT/k jo
Kelly Olson, Clerk-Typist II, implemented QuarkXPress in the publication of the September and October
Library Sampler newsletter, she aided Children's Librarian in the weeding of J Non-Fiction, and in processing
bulk loans for area schools. Due to staff shortages and a staff medical leave, Kelly stepped in to cover the
operations of the Children's Department in the Children's Librarian's absence during the times when Marsha
staffed the adult reference desk. Thanks to Kelly for the additional efforts put forth this month.
Pages: The Children's Department is still short one page most days of the week. The pages have been busy
shelving, shelf reading and covering the circulation desk. We began a J Fiction mending project this month
and have progressed through J Fic Bur.
