D. Library Kids are Cool 1999 Summer MELSA Reading Club closed this yearwith 606 children registered.
This figure is down from 1998 due, in part, I believe, to ACL's development of their own reading club to
include prizes.
ACL has also begun extensive coordination with area schools to encourage use of the summer reading
programs.
Area schools are also providing space for summer programs on site. These programs are drawing
larger crowds and creating additional enrollment. It is questionable, however, whether or not additional
enrollment figures are children actually using the library (or only in attendance at the programs). Also, a
certain number of children signed up for both the Middle school program(Libra) and the Library Kids are
Cool program so, there is some duplication of statistics.
E. American Girls Tea party with Felicity Merriman was held on August 18 at 3:00 pm. Thirty-two girls
ages 8 to 12 participated in this program promoting the library's collection of American Girls titles. The
program was a huge success thanks to the efforts of the entire staff and volunteers but especially
thanks to the efforts of the children's Department summer Aide Alicia Andrews. Alicia helped the
librarian with the original plan and proceeded to do the majority of the leg work involved in developing
the activities. She worked closely with Kelly Olson on the design for posters, invitations, and tea
cards.
II. Projects
A. Prepared a proposal for service to ICS for the 1999-2000 school year.
B. Prepared Promotional materials for distribution throughout the school district.
III. Collection
A. Placed a large order for books on August 13.
B. Began Weeding the J NonFiction sections. I am discarding those items that have circed less than
10 times over a 10 year period and that are single copies within the catalog. We have progressed
through j371and thus far have discarded 42 books.
C. As a part of the J non fiction weeding process we have shifted the JNF section and established a
separate section after the J900s to house the Easy non fiction. This will make the easy non fiction
more accessible to young children and those children just learning to read but preferring non fiction
"true stories" will be able to locate the type of materials they prefer more easily. Staff will have an
additional section to shelve and sort but overall time spent should be minimal.
IV. Meetings
21s~ century Grant- I met with the 21at century grant planning committees on August 17 from 10 to 2 pm
to discuss programming for the upcoming year as it relates to the 21st Century Grant. Valeija
Rasmussen, Middle School Media Specialist and I spent some time discussing the challenges facing
the middle school this year. With no media center available untill sometime next spring, those students
will be utilizing this library quite heavily. Valeija requested materials from Columbia Heights Public
Library for use at the school. We are working on the possibility of making classroom collections
available for the teachers through our bulk loan policy. District 13 Media specialists also requested
promotional materials on Columbia Heights Public Library to be available in the classrooms throughout
the school year. These promotional materials would include: posters, library card applications,
assignment alerts, listing of items a student might want to consider taking with him/her to the library,
bookmarks (includes location, phone numbers, hours, etc.). Kelly Olson and I have been working on
some of these materials. Samples are available at this meeting.
V. Staff
With six new pages on staff since last month, the majority of my time has been spent in follow-up and
reinforcement of the correct procedures and policies. All of our new staff members are eager to learn
but fearful of doing anything incorrectly. Over time they what they are unsure of now will become
routine. Until then I will continue to watch closely.
Kelly Olson, clerk typist, has been working diligently on the promotional materials for the school district,
two new layouts for the 1999 version of our "Keeping in Touch" newsletter to area educators, volunteer
recognition certificates and invitations, and aiding the librarian in the weeding of J non fiction.
