May 1999 Operational Report
Programs
A. Field Trips

C. Outreach
21 programs at area elementary schools 72 adults/1533 children
II.
Collection
A. Weeding: Completed the weeding of the Jfic collection. Discarded 658 Titles with
low circ or that should extreme wear and damage.
B. Placed an order for safety books to be purchased through the donation we received
from area Fire Departments.
C. Continued work on the JNonFiction & E NonFiction areas doing collection
development and weeding.
III. Projects
A. Funtime Storytime: Registration for this program is full at this time (50 children and
accompanying adults). First session to begin June 17.
B. ENCHANTMENT OF LIBRA reading club for middle school children begins
registration on June 7. Vaelja Rassmussen, middle school media specialist, visited the
middle school classrooms to promote the reading club.
C. LIBRARY KIDS ARE COOL our regular MELSA reading club begins registration
on June 14. Kelly and I visited each of the elementary schools and did separate
storytimes for all classes. Kelly read the Big hungry_ bear, the little mouse, and the red
ripe strawberry_ for the Kindergarten classes and Marsha read Piggie pie for grades 1
through 5.

D. MY TEACHER STORYTIME. This is a NEW storytime program. Teachers from
the3 elementary schools have signed up to do a storytime aimed at school-age children.
My Teacher Storytime begins June 24 and continues through August 5 or possibly August
12. I am hopeful that this program will bring in new patrons and introduce the Children's
Department to families that have not utilized the facility in the past.
E. Wargo Nature Center will be providing three programs in August on Thursday
mornings at 10:00 am. These Wargo Nature Center Wildlife Education Outreach
Programs will include: Butterflies (August 5 ), Snake (August 12) and the Loon (August
19).
F. Super Tuesdays Performers have been booked, brochures were distributed to the
District 13 students during the class visits this month (copies attached). ! anticipate
another great year with this program.
Goals
A. Completed the weeding of the J Fiction section
B. Expanded the availability of storytimes to families and school-age children with the
addition of "My Teacher Storytime". At the same time, providing more exposure for the
library within the community and meeting a partial goal of the Marketing Plan for 1999.
C. Attended a class on Word Perfect 8 provided by the City.
D. Supervised the staff efforts in the production of print materials for distribution to area
schools.
Staff
A. Kelly Olson, completed these tasks this month: 3 color brochures promoting Super
Tuesday Specials, two booklists (Reading Rainbow, Books To Film), conducted
Storytime for all area kindergarten classes, produced flyers and contracts for My Teacher
Storytime, began developing a promotion for audio books on tape called "Read it, Listen
to it", attended class and received certification on CPR, represented the Library at the
annual Crestview/Highland Senior Prom.
B. Pages aided in the weeding of the JFiction, stuffed 2000 plus brochures, cut and
folded an additional 1000 Enchantment of Libra flyers and various forms to complement
both reading clubs, Kari Kyle and Deb Cook aided in the production of Summer Reading
Club bulletin board, shifted J Fiction section to accommodate the audio cassettes.
