CITY OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS
TO: Mayor, City Council, City Manager, Division Heads, Library Board
FROM: M. Rebecca Loader, Library Director
SUBJECT: Operational Report #5 (August 21-September 1)
DATE: September 1, 1989
Significant accomplishments
A. On the 22nd, 197 children celeb'rated the end of Reading Club by
viewing the movie, "Bambi."
On the 24, the pages met to negotiate fall schedule. Fall schedule
will start the week of September 4.
"Cinderella" was shown to 83 children on the 29th as the last Tuesday
special.
Joanne Scudder celebrated her 23rd year of service with the City on
August 22.
Departmental goals
A. Construction is the big news this month. The staff operated out of the
basement for two weeks and moved back upstairs on the 28th. Unfortunately,
power did not cooperate with the move, and the library could not open to the
public till 3:30 p.m. on the 28th. The carpet is scheduled for cleaning,
the new shelving is ready to be installed, the cable channel is back on-the-
air, the computer terminals are back on the circulation desk, and normalcy
is almost restored. A special note of thanks to the staff for all their
hard work:

Also, a special thanks to our friends at Anoka County Library, Hennepin
County Library, and Minneapolis Public Library who cooperated with us
during this trying time by storing all our returned books.
Ail the periodicals have been rotated into the store room and mended
in preparation for moving into their new system in the re-modelled brown room.
The new microfiche catalog has been installed in the children's department.
New experimental Saturday hours will begin on September 9. A survey will
be taken in September and a follow-up survey will be taken in December to
measure effectiveness of the different open hours.
Issues and problems
A. Gestetner delivered a different copier to the library on August 30 for us
to use for two weeks. Staff will be evaluating its effectiveness.
B. The library's data line was down on August 29 for several hours. This is the
first time since we have been online that we have lost service for such a
length of time.
