Over 475 participants qualified by earning tickets, and 341 children (and at least 50 adults) showed up at the library to take part in the fun. Thanks go to all the people who helped with this huge project. As part of the Tuesday specials, the following programs have been held: (attendance) ~August 5 Sidewalk drawing contest 79 August 12 Everybody's birthday party 87 August 19 "Alice in Wonderland." 139 · The book bus has completed another successful summer run, and thanks go to Jo, Ed Diane, Karen, Donna, and the staff for helping to make the extended schedule run smoothly. Thanks to the Friends of the Library for the cookies they provided for the August senior citizen program. Thanks also go to Connie Carlson, Pat Jindra, Nancy Rathbun, Evelyn Reinholdson, and Macile Reinholdson for helping to serve. The Annual Booksale was held August 7 and 8 in the basement activity room. The Friends and the library managed to get rid of a lot of unwanted material and to make some money to re-direct back into services and the collection. Thanks to everyone for all their hard work. !!! THEY'RE HERE !!! On August 11, 1986, the contract for the library's automated circulation system was approved by the City Council. The telecommunications equipment and the first terminal have been wired, and Becky has received training on the system. The entire staff will be trained during the month of September~ and the collection will be barcoded during the training. We are all excited about the possibilities of being on-line and are eagerly anticipating improved service for the patrons. Keep watching for updates on our conversion process and the further adventures of Ruby Wand and her friends. (Ruby Wand is a barcode reader which links the patron to the items checked out on his card.) Please welcome Michelle Nordby to the library staff as our new clerk-typist in the children's department. Michelle is originally from Menahga, Minnesota, and has worked in a variety of libraries--including Lake Agassiz in Fargo/Moorhead. Michelle likes playing the piano, reading, and kids. Say hello to her the next time you are in the library. - 2 - Jo Scudder celebrated 20 years of service to the children of Columbia Heights on August 22. She has seen a lot of changes during her tenure with the library and has con- tributed toward providing quality programs and materials for the community. Congratula- tions, Jo!
