Summer programs are all in full swing in the children's department. 655 children
are participating in the summer reading clubs and are earning tickets for the special
carnival to be held in August. As part of the Tuesday specials, the following pro-
grams have been held: (attendance)
July 1 Cartoon festival 128
July 8 Crafts (humming toys, gliders) 110
July 15 "Benji." 147
July 22 Crafts (masks) 79
July 29 Puppet show (six skits, with one 75
performed by guest puppeteers
Chrissie, Teresa, and Erin)
Pre-school funtime ended on the 24th after six weeks of sessions, with around sixty
children participating each week. Thanks to Klm and Karen for the very extra special
job they did with this p~ogram. The Book Bus is off and running and has not broken
down yet in spite of its longer schedule. Mr. Ed Geslin is our driver again and is
doing a great job.
Thanks go to the Friends of the Library for the doughnuts they provided for the July
senior citizen program. Thanks also go to Marie Eng, Faye Kluk, Nancy Rathbun, and
Macile Reinholdson for helping to serve.
July 18 was Local Paraprofessional Day, and Jo and Mary were treated to lunch at
Arthur's in recognition of their work for the library. Together they have 28 years
of service to the City of Columbia Heights.
Progress is being made on conversion of the library's data base to machine-readable
format. The main frame computer has been delivered to Blaine, and Data Research
Associates has made its first visit to install the sOftware. The data lines have
been installed and Heights Electric did a great job of supplying conduit and good
advice. Stay tuned for updates!

The Reading Carnival will be held in the children's room of the library on Tuesday,
August 26 from 1 til 4 p.m. So far 655 children have joined our Summer Reading
Clubs. These children are now in the process of earning tickets to spend at the
Carnival by reading books.
Volunteers are urgently needed to help with the Carnival. We need:
1. People to help run booths.
2. People with good ideas to share (carnival games).
3. People to help find prize donations (perhaps from local merchants).
4. People to bake cupcakes for our cupcake walk.
See Miss Jo in the children's room, or call 788-3924 if you wish to help. Thank you!
