The summer got off to a wonderful start on June lOth with a balloon launch from the
library. Mayor Bruce Nawrocki and Councilmember Rita Petkoff led 175 participants
in releasing balloons tagged with self-addressed postcards. On the 17th, 185 children
viewed the Walt Disney film, "Pinocchio." Two of the library's pages, Kim Galka and
Karen Wilson, conducted the first preschool funtime on the 19th for 59 children. Kim
and Karen, students at Columbia Heights High School, will be conducting this structured
playtime program for six weeks under Jo's guidance. Teddy bear picture frames were
made by 132 participants on the 24th for the Tuesday Special. The Reading Carnival
has 480 registered readers in the three levels available. Seven have participated in
the ceramic doll class for elementary-age children and two in the plastic needlepoint
basket class. On the 25th, Jo and the pages leafleted areas around the new Book Bus
stops with brochures outlining the schedule for the summer. The Bus was also in the
Jamboree Parade on the 27th in an effort to heighten visibility of the program and its
new stops. Special recognition goes to all those attractive people on board:
Peg Bachman Klm Galka Barb Miller Mr. Twitter
Bernard Betsy Hoium Laura Peterson Gloria Uden
LeeAnn Bocwinski Nancy Hoium Jo Scudder Donna Whitehill
Tim Dugdale Mary Kloss Dianne Stewart Karen Wilson
Kathy Koteles Marsha Tubbs
and kudos to Mr. Ed Geslin, our driver through thick and thin!
Thanks go to the Friends of the Library for the cheese and crackers they provided for
the June senior citizen program. Thanks also go to Connie Carlson, Marie Eng, Nancy
Rathbun, and Evelyn Reinholdson for helping to serve.
Be sure to catch the library staff's debut as to stars on cable channel 16! Monday
through Friday at 9, 11, 1, 3~ 5, and 7 our video, "Live from the Library -- It's
Wednesday Afternoon!" will be shown originating from the library. Don't miss these
original spots about the library's summer programs and specials...who could forget the
Unknown Reader or Jo's Boschwitz Brothers impersonation!
Also, don't miss all the book displays in the library. The subject displays will be
changing every two weeks and a book list of titles is available for each display.
Displays are put together by the part-time library supervisors--Gary, Kathy, Marsha,
and Skaidrite. New and popular book displays are also being changed daily. Laura and
LeeAnn, our resident romance experts, are also doing a display of new paperback
romances for summer reading. All materials in the displays may be checked out.
Paula Fox, new branch librarian at St. Anthony, brought her staff to Columbia Heights
to meet our staff. St. Anthony, Columbia Heights, and the northeast branch of MPLIC
are planning some cooperative ventures in the near future.
