The children's department has been getting ready for a busy summer full of programs.
Jo and Peg have visited the schools to distribute informational brochures and to high-
light special programs. Jo conducted three field trip programs for nursery schools
during the month.
Thanks go to Delight Olson, Jane Polley, Nancy Rathbun~ Macile Reinholdson, and Pauline
Rusinyak for the brownies they baked for the May senior citizen program. Thanks also
go to Nancy Rathbun, Evelyn Reinholdson, Macile Reinholdson~ and Pauline Rusinyak for
helping to serve.
May 18th was the library's last open Saturday until September 7. Books returned after
hours should be placed in the book depository.
On May 22 the Friends hosted a delightful program of South American folk music pre-
sented by Kathy and Leo Lara. Kathy and her children are frequent users of the library
and the program gave everyone a chance to learn about music and instruments from a very
rich culture. Thanks to the Laras for a fine performance with excellent audience
participation and to the Friends for making it possible.
On the 29th the full-time staff treated the graduating senior pages to breakfast at
the Pannekoeken Huis. They each received a small remembrance from the staff and a
recognition resolution from the Library Board of Trustees. At the High School Awards
Day, the following honors were given:
LeAnn Bocwinski ..... National Honor Society member
excellent performance on National Merit Qualifying Test
scholarship from Marquette State Bank
Kristi BurC ......... National Honor Society member
National Honor Society secretary-treasurer
scholarship from Hilltop Chamber of Commerce
excellent performance on National Merit Qualifying Test
Lynette Johnson ..... National Honor Society member
scholarship from Hagen's Appliances
Laura Peterson ...... National Honor Society member
Paula Skone ......... scholarship from Y-teens
Congratulations, pages!
The library has a 1971 edition of the Encyclopedia Americana for sale. All 30 volumes
are here and in fairly good shape after fourteen years of heavy use. If you are
interested in seeing the set and placing a bid, please see Becky or call the library.

A special thanks goes to Marie Eng and Aileen Sturdevant for volunteering on May 30
when the senior pages graduated and left the library short-handed. Thanks also to
Jenny Debner (a Junior page) for being flexible and to LeeAnn Bonwinski, Marie Burgoyne,
and Laura P~t~r~on for coming in during the day.
Ruth Miller is retiring from the Library Board of Trustees as of April after 30 years
of service. Ruth has held every office (some several times!) and has given of her time
and effort to many major projects. Since she was appointed on July 1, 1955, Ruth has
seen the library's collection grown from 11~339 books to 62,734 books and materials.
Ruth's mother, Elizabeth Russell, served on the Board before her, and Ruth's daughter~
Barbara Miller, has been appointed to the Board as of May 28, 1985. The library has
occupied various rented spaces over her term of service, and she participated in
acquiring its permanent location at Jackson and 4Oth in 1960. Building projects in
1965, 1975, and 1983, have brought the library up to its current stature, and Ruth has
been an active participant in the long-range planning necessary in a successful library
service operation. Thank you, Ruth, for your years of dedication.
