The children's department is winding down the winter sessions of pre-school storyhour.
Jo had 41 registered in the 4-5 year-old, 8-weeks session~ 28 in the 3-year-old, 6-weeks
session~ and 29 in the 2-year-old, 6-weeks session. The Reading Train Read-to-Me Club
was a whistle-blowing success with 170 registered participants. A Brownie Troop and
a Tiger Cub Pack visited the library during March for tours and an introduction to
library services and materials. They were all very charming future patrons.
Thanks go to Harriet Deeble~ Sue Murzyn, Delight Olson, and Macile Reinholdson for the
pistachio cupcakes they baked for the March senior citizens' program. Thanks also go
to Delight O]son, Evelyn Reinholdson~ LoraineReisewitz~ and Madge Sandgren for helping
to serve. A very special thanks go to the Friends for obtaining a Public Service
Community Block Grant in Anoka County to provide funding to bring blr. Bob Gasch, a pro-
fessional storyteller, to this program. His telling of "The Seasons at Grandpa and
Grandma's Farm" was witty and entertaining.
Jo and Peg attended a workshop sponsored by MELSA called "Reading Aloud to Your
ChildrenTM on March 26th. Author Jim Trelease, a best friend of libraries and librari-
ans~ expounded on the virtues of reading aloud to your children and of limiting tele-
vision watching. Welcome back to ]~<arsha Tubbs, who has been away on a leave of absence
to spend time with her new son Ryan. Thanks to Gary Nygaard for working extra hours
during Mars]~a's leave. Jo and Becky attended an open house at the Boulevard, the new
apartment complex next to CrestvJew Lutheran Home~ on March 27th and were impressed with
the facilities. Becky and Nancy Hoium, President of the Library Board of Trustees,
attended a hearing of the .joint House/Senate Subcommittee on Libraries on the 20th.
Bills concerning the funding for regional library systems and funding for extending
service to counties presently not ~aving libraries are now before the legislature. The
staff also participated in the follow-up questionnaire for the City's quality circle
program.
National Library Week will be celebrated April 14-20, and it has been officially pro-
c]aimed as such in Columbia Heights by Mayor Nawrocki. A Reading Raffle will be held
with chances given away for materials borrowed~ and prizes will be awarded each day in
the adult and children's departments. The new records and tapes will be ready for
borrowing, and a list of new acquisitions will be available at that time. Two guessing
contests will also be held, and the winners will be announced on the following Monday.
