The children's department hosted two field trips of ICS's kindergarten classes, and
around fifty children were introduced to the library. As part of Catholic Education
Week, Miss Jo visited with 32 second-graders from Mrs. Cone's class and told them about
her life as a child growing up in Columbia Heights. (One second-grader wanted to know
if there were windows "back then.") After-School-Art classes started the last week
in January and had a good turn-out in spite of the cold weather.
Thanks go to Marie Eng, Lucille McFail, Ruth Westerberg, and Lee Wilke for the assorted
quick breads they baked for the January senior citizen program. Thanks also go to
]~arie Eng, Ruth Westerberg, and Lee Wilke for helping to serve.
Be sure to check out the display cases at the library this month. Kenny Hentges has
some model trains in the basement display case, and Becky and Mary have a small selec-
tion from their collections of depression era kitchenware in the main floor case.
The library has been the recipient of a cash gift from Rainbow School. This donation
will be used to purchase cassette/book media kits for the children's department.
The staff has been busy over the last month. Jo traveled to Ridgedale on the 24th to
participate in a book review session on best-of-'84 children's books with 60 Hennepin
County librarians. She was introduced during the session and got to inspect one of
the libraries she will be visiting this summer on an exchange program. Along with
other City employees, Becky participated in a workshop on comparable worth conducted
by Control Data Corporation (CDC) on the 31st. The questionnaire worked on in the
session will be part of the comparable worth study conducted by CDC on behalf of a
large group of Minnesota cities. The RFP for an automated circulation system for the
county is in its final stages~ and the committee hopes to have it finished by February
15.
The staff welcomes Jenny Debner, a junior at Columbia Heights High School, as a new
page at the library.
A very special thanks go to the Friends of the Library for the generous gifts they gave
to the library this year. We have received the following:
1. 120 plastic tube hangers
2. 1 hand truck
3. 1 table truck
4. 10 (30" x 72") folding tables
