Thanks go to Marie Eng, Ruth Westerberg, and Lee Wilkie for the chocolate velvet cakes they baked for the April senior citizen program. Thanks also go to Marie Eng, Nancy Rathbun, and Lee Wilkie for helping to serve. The library celebrated National Library Week April 17-23 with the theme "Go For It--Use Your Library." Fine-free week enticed some patrons to return long- overdue materials, but the response was not very heavy. Five contests were conducted and the winners were: Children's Department Strawberry Shortcake Coloring Contest (preschoolers) First: Loren DeVries Honorable Mention: Rebecca DeVries Dale DeSteno Drawing of Favorite Story (Grades K-2) ~irst: Monica Chiodo Honorable Mention: Becky Otte Barbie Francisco Unscramble the Storybook Characters (Grades 3-5) First: Shelly Pogreba Honorable Mention: Andrea Maenke Bonney Schweiger ADULT DEPARTMENT Trivia Contest (51 entries) First: Scott Swanson Guess the Number of Rubber Bands (118 entries) First: Sue Culhane Ginny ConweJl Congratulations!!! The big news at the library this month is that the basement renovation project has become a reality. A three-year project undertaken by the Library Board of Trustees began in 1980-1981 with a study of the building to determine how to best utilize existing space and how to provide fire protection in the base- merit. In 1981, TKDA, an architectural firm~ worked with the Board to explore concepts and to develop preliminary plans. In 1982 the plans for the integrated project were approved by the Board and City Council. In early 1983 construction documents were prepared and bids were taken, with the bid being awarded to D. W. Harstad by the City Council so that construction could begin on April 25. During the six weeks of construction, the Children's Department will have erratic hours, and the staff urges you to call first before making the trip to the library. Filmstrip loans and Get-Well Boxes will not be available from the library during the construction time, and entry to the Children's Department is only possible through the outside, south basement stairs. A drawing of the finished project is on the bulletin board in the main lobby. The Board and staff wish ,to express their appreciation to the ~ayor, City Council, City ~lanager and all the City staff members who contributed tim~ and effort to th~ project and ~o thank the ~ayor, City Council, and City Manager for their con- tinued support of quality library service in Columbia Heights.
