The children's department has drawn a wild summer to a quiet close. 768 children participated in the library's three reading clubs~ and this huge number set an all-time record. Those children who completed the clubs' requirements were treated to parties on August 10 and 12. Three weeks of pre-school crafts in August rounded out the summer sched- ule. Thanks go to Lucy Arent, Pat Jindra, and Sue Murzyn for the lemonade cheesecake they baked for the July senior citizen program. Thanks also go to Pat Jindra, Ruth Miller, Loretta Spindler, and Ruth Wester- berg for helping to serve. Sixty-five people enjoyed the return of adult story-teller Loren Niemi with his program~ "Once upon a Time, Part II." This program was sponsored by the ~tinnesota Association of Library Friends and the llinnesota Humanities Commission. The Fifth Annual Unannounced, Unadvertised Book Sale was a howling success. Nearly all the one zillion items offered were sold and the happy results are: Friends ...... $654.10 Library ...... 251.45 $9O5.55 It is interesting to note that in the past three years, the library has made zbout the same amount at the sale~ which indicates we are discarding about the same number of items, and the Friends have tripled their profit, which is a great tribute to their dedication and hard work. Good show, ladies! It was a pure delight to work with you on this project. September 11 will be the library's first open Saturday of the fall season. ~obyn Eide and Jeanne Sopcinski have both finished their careers at the library. Carol Uden~ who worked on a special project over the summer, has returned to Concordia College. The staff wishes them well in their future endeavors. The "pagettes~' met to negotiate fall sched- ule on August 23, and they are now regular pages. Fall schedule started August 30, the first day of school in District 13. On August 26, Becky and Mary went to the record store and spent a lot of money. The new records and tapes will be ready for public use in mid-September.
