The children's department will be taking registration for pre-school story hour up through October 6 and for Tiny Tot Story Time up through October 15. Children must be 3 ½ and 2 ½ years old respectively for participating in these programs. Thanks go to Nancy Rathbun, Stephanie Rose and Kay Reiners for the chocolate oatmeal bars they baked for the September senior citizen program. Mr. Loren Niemi presented a special program, "Once upon a time: Myths, Fairytales and Legends for Adults," as part of the Minnesota Association of Library Friends 1981 Chautauqua series. The Friends received their long awaited cookbooks and are offering them for sale at $4.00 each to all interested parties. Funds raised will be used for projects of benefit to the library. The Friends were also the recipient of a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. John S. White in appreciation of the library over the years. The November Senior Citizen program will be held on Thursday, November 12 at 2:00 p.m. because the library will be closed in observance of a holiday on Wednesday, November 11. The Friends sponsored a salad luncheon on September 14 and served 72 people with some extremely delicious food. If you are interested in a cookbook or in joining the Friends, please contact Helen Merrick at 788-8318. The library has received the 1981 Polk Directory for the Minneapolis suburbs, and it is ready for use in the reference collection. Teleprompter, the company which is bidding on the cable franchise in Columbia Heights/Hilltop, has prepared a brochure What's Cable TV? which summarizes their three volume proposal. This brochure is available at no charge in the library's pamphlet rack. New editions of the World Book Encyclopedia and Childcraft have been ordered and will be added to the reference collection soon. The library's new Olivetti electronic typewriter has arrived and Darlene and Gloria are learning quickly about all its special functions. Plans for a demonstration for interested City employees are being made. Becky attended a cable tv workshop September 11, and Jo attended a cable tv production workshop on September 12. The workshop gave them an idea of what the library could do with cable and what other organizations have already done. The library staff is encouraging all people who support libraries to write to their congressmen. In this time of economic depression, libraries have been marked as a luxury item, which are not necessary in society. It is time for all those who support libraries and their role in society to speak out and to let your congressmen know where the public stands. If you need help finding the address of your congressmen or in phrasing your letter, please call the library at 788-3924. EXPERT & PROF. SERVICE: Arvid M. Larson TR ¥EL, CONF., SCHOOL: Mary M.
