June 652 779 72
July 888 402 27
Based on 68 working days in the last 3-month period, this means that the l~brary
staff answered approximately 32.5 reference, 23.8 directional A, and 2.4 direc-
tional B questions per day.
The children's department ended its summer programs with two gala
parties. The Read-to-Me Club party on August 13 hosted 120 children and adults
out of 125 who had completed the requirements, and the Sesame Gulch Club party
on August 20 hosted 185 out of 230 children who had finished by the deadline.
Thanks to a warmly-received postman who arrived in the nick of time with the
film, the children who came to see "The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again" were
not disappointed. However, Becky was practicing "Hey, Big Spender" on the
piano just in case she had to accompany the CHPL Emergency Entertainers at the
spur of the moment. There were 47 children entertained at a cartoon festival
August 6, 63 at a Marguerite Henry filmstrip show on August 10, 217 at "Bed-
knobs and Broomsticks" on August ll, and 23 at the "Adventures of Tom Sawyer"
on August 17. On August 4, 41 children thrilled to five puppet shows, "Katy-
no-Pocket," "The Gunniwolf," "Miss Piggy and the Beast," "Clever Grethel,"
and "Sneaky Snake." The first field trip of the fall season arrived on August
24 when 24 pre-schoolers from Rainbow School visited the library.
The 4th Annual Unannounced, Unadvertised Book Sale on August 6-7
netted the following happy results:
Friends $316.50
Library 273.45
$589.95
Everyone seemed to have a good time wheeling and dealing with the Friends, and
there was a lot of laughing over "bio" deals. The first day ended with a banq
when we did not quite outrun a rains~ower. With some luck and the help of
everyone, only a few magazines got wet beyond saving. Several people were
drenched thoroughly in the effort, and Becky wants everyone to know how much
she appreciated the team effort.
Many projects were completed by the staff over the summer. Due to an
outstanding effort by the pages, the following were finished: 1. cleaning of the storeroom
2. annual inventory of the collection
3. shifting of old issues of periodicals to basement storeroom
4. changing labels on microfilm cabinet

21. various smaller projects
Everyone worked hard at these projects and deserves a warm congratulations on a
job well done.
Jo and some of her puppets were interviewed on film by Teleprompter,
a cable tv company, in August. They were very impressed by her menagerie of
voices and personalities, and they think she could easily have her own show
on cable tv. Now the staff has to put up with a gold star on her locker, sun
glasses with rhinestones, and constant requests for autographs. I guess that
is one of the things you have to expect when someone becomes a star. Jo also
celebrated ~he beginning of her 16th year with the City on August 21st. Her
continued service to the children of the area is appreciated.
Thanks go to Agnes Anderson, Lucie Arent, Cheryl Bltnkman, and Marie
Hansen for the cinnamon apple cakes they baked for the August senior citizen
program. Thanks also go to Janie Polley and the pages for their help in
serving. Mr. Bob Gasch, a professional storyteller, entertained everyone
with a presentation on old-time radio shows. ~ext month, W. Loren ~iemi will
present "Once Upon a Time: Myths, Legends, and Fairytales for Adults" at the
senior citizen program. This program will be sponsored in cooperation with
the Minnesota Association of Library Friends, and fundinq has been made
possible by a grant from the Minnesota Humanities Commission as part of a
chautauqua project.
Becky and Mary went to Discount Records on August 14, and the 140
new records and 30 new cassette tapes they purchased will be available for
use soon. Julie Skone worked her last day on August 12 and is already off
at school in Stout. Sue Skene worked her last day on August 28 and will start
her classes in practical nursing at Minneapolis Technical Institute on the 10th
of September. Dale Uden, who has been helping out while Wayne was recovering
from surgery, has also returned to school. Carol Uden, Dale Uden, and Nancy
Uden, children of Gloria, won championships at the Anoka County Fair, and also
won trips to the State Fair with their projects.
