The library has acquired two special kinds of books, cloth and paste-
board, which are aimed at en~ouragina preschoolers and their parents in be§innino
to read. They utilize laroe formats and simple words, and may now be renuested
in the children's department.
On November 13, an open house was held at the library in honor of ?rs.
Ruth Hiller's twenty-five years of service on the Library Board of Trustees.
Approximately fifty well-wishers turned out to ~reet Mrs. Miller, and the
Honorable Bruce Nawrocki, Hayor of Columbia Heights, presented her with a copy
of a City proclamation in her honor. The library staff presented her with a
gift, and the Libra.fy Board desiqnated three books to be marked in her honor
in the permanent collection. The Friends presented Hrs. Miller with the quest
book and are making a scrapbook with photographs of the open house for her.
Thanks qo to Harie Eng, Pat Jindra, Rita Norberq, Jane Polley, Kay Reiners,
and Pauline Rusinyak for their help in the celebration.
Thanks go to Hartha Emerson, Harie En~, Jane Polley, and Ruth
Westerberg for the Creole gingerbread cakes they baked for the November
senior citizens' proQram and for their heQp in servinq.
The children's department celebrated National Children's Book
Week with a "Vote for Books" theme, where the children voted for their
favorite books. The top winners were:
1. Star wars: the Empire strikes back,
2. Peanuts books
3. Pi~s' book of world records.
Charlie'& the chocolate' factory.
Joke a~d 'riddle books
4. Muppets books
5. The black stallion.
6. Are you there God, It's me Karoaret.
Dennis the Menace books

Little House books
Jo has put on three special field-trip proorams as well as winding up the fall
session of pre-school story hour. "The Reluctant Astronaut" was shown to
about 60 children on the day after Thanksniving while their parents went
Christmas shopping.
