HomeMy WebLinkAboutNovember 12, 1980COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT November 12, 1980 Circulation for the month of September was up by 18% from 1979. 1979 1980 Adult 4,327 5,197 Juvenile 2,852 3,2.65. 7,179 8,462 A total increase of 1,283 items shows a 20.1 increase in adult and a 14.5% increase in juvenile items circulated to the public. This large increase was seen in other libraries in the metropolitan area also, as the Washington County system drew a 22% overall increase. Two things can be identified as possible contributing factors: the local newspaper strike and the television actors' strike. People were stranded without a source of information and entertainment in their homes, so the library attracted some new users. The Children's Department hosted a variety of programs during the past month. Honor Miss Piggy Day saw fifty-seven children making piggy banks, listening to pig stories, and watching Miss Piggy herself act in a new version of that old classic, "Beauty and the Beast," which included a special guest appearance by Cookie Monster. Three weeks of story hours aimed at 2½-year-olds brought such a response that it had to be divided into two smaller groups. Halloween movies were shown to an appreciative group on the 30th, and no-one is sure yet who that gorilla in the back row was. The Noon Movies were run two more Tuesdays in October, and the audience went up the first week and then down again for the second showing. The gorgeous fall weather is against us in trying to draw people in during the day. Thanks go to Harriet Deeble, Pat Jindra, Faye Kluk, and Judy Vircks for the marshmallow/banana bars they baked for the October senior citizen program. The library is having an open house on Thursday, November 13, noon to 2 o'clock p.m. to honor Ruth Miller for serving on the Library Board of Trustees for twenty-five years. Mrs. Miller has been active in the Columbia Heights area for many years and has given willingly of her time for community service. November l0 and ll were fine-free days for the library, and any overdue materials returned on those days were accepted with no questions asked. This did not apply to damaged items. Classes sponsored by Recreation/Community Education have continued to bring in new people to the library. Ti~e s'i~edule for winter quarter is in the process of being worked out. Doug Johnson left his position as Community Education Director with the City on Hovember 7th. The staff appreciates the work he has done in cooperation with the library and wishes him well in his future endeavors. The League of Women Voters held an informative program on the proposed amendments to be voted on in November at the library. Approximately twenty people were in attendance. Report November 12, 1980 Page 2 Jo and Darlene went to the Book Fair at the University of Minnesota on October 28 and got to preview a selection of children's books. They selected about 50 new titles to be added to the collection. Mary attended a two-day workshop on public relations for libraries at St. Catherine's on October 24 and 25. Exercises in design and composition of posters, ads, news releases and other forms of publicity were conducted and samples of the participants' work were critiqued. Jo and Becky went to Bookmen, the library's paperback supplier, and to Blumberg's, which will repair some of the library's ausio-visual equipment, on November 6. The Friends celebrated their one-year birthday on November 3 with a combined party/meting at the library. After a successful first year, they have generously purchased a stand for the copy machine and a walnut newspaper rack as gifts to the library.
