HomeMy WebLinkAboutSeptember 2, 1980COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PUBLIC LIBRARY Report September 2, 1980 Circulation figures for July are deliqhtful: 1980 Adult 5,167 Juvenile 5,222 Book Bus 2,740 13,129 197g 4,8-~8 6,359 11,177 The Book Bus is responsible for circulating a total of 3,213 items in its 7-week journeys to the parks. This total far exceeds any expectations of the staff, and plans are already being examined for possible inclusion in next year's program. The Children's Department has brought the summer programs to a close with two parties for all those children who have completed the requirements for reading club. In the Book Trek Reading Club, 396 joined, 147 finished, and 125 attended the celebration held on August 14. Top readers are: Advanced Beginning Susan Rud, 180 books Dan Keller, 180 books Scott Smith, 160 books In the pre-school Read-to-Me Club, 127 joined, 87 finished, and 63 attended the party. Games and refreshments were enjoyed at both parties, and "ne Love Bug" ~ovie was shown at the party for the older children. The movie, "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" was shown twice to 165 people, and "Camelot" was shown to 55. The Third Annual Unannounced, Unadvertised Book Sale brought in a total of $483.09 with $235.30 going to the Friends and $247.79 going to the library. Thanks go to all the people who donated books, and to the Friends who worked as salespeeple during the two-day sale. Thanks go to Agnes Anderson, Cheryl Blinkman, and Loretta Spindler for the Crunch cupcakes they baked for the August senior citizen program. Becky visited Discount Records on the 15th, and with Audrey's help, she has set a record for buying 120 phonodiscs and 20 cassettes in two and one-half hours. The ncw acquisitions are now ready to be checked out from the library. Some minor repairs have been made around the library building. Two door closers have been replaced, two locks have been repaired, and the railings into the basement have been re-cemented. A flagpole has been donated to the library by Helen Merrick (Columbia Heights), Stefanie Rose (Columbia Heights}, Valerie Sramek {Rushville, Indiana), and Peter Ulmaniec {Minneapolis}. These four people are making the presentation in honor of their parents, who wer~ among the first settlers in this area. The pole will be dedicated later in September. Fall schedule will begin for the library on September 2, and September 6 will be the first open Saturday. Fall hours will be: Monday 9-8:30 Thursday 9-8:30 Tuesday 9-8:30 Friday 9-5:00 Wednesday 9-8:30 Saturday 9-1:00 Susan Skone, last of the three graduating pages, has left to study nursing at Winona.
