August, 1980
The sun~ner doldrums missed the Friends. We have kept busy with
some money-making projects and library assistance activities.
When you receive this letter we will have completed four nights
of serving snacks at the park board concerts this sun, her. Homemade donuts,
cookies, and bars helped us increase our proceeds together with coffee,
pop, and snacks. Thanks to all the people who donated either their time
or their goodies for this project--especially Janie Polley who headed it.
ATTENTION EVERYONE! You can help! The 3rd Annual Book Sale will
be held Thursday and Friday, August 14 and 15, from 9 a,m. until 5 p.m.
Proceeds from the sale of books or magazines donated by Friends members and
participating citizens will go into our treasury. The library will receive
the proceeds from the sale of their books. Call Pauline Rusinyak, 788-8924,
if you can volunteer some time for setting up the book sale or for selling.
Brown paper bags are needed. Drop them off at the library. Tell all your
friends! Word of mcuth publicity is always the best.
We have finished paying Graves Interiors for the canvas for book
bags. Mr. Terry's graphic arts class from the high school did a terrific
job of preparing the silk screen with the library's new logo. Many excellent
sewers among the Friends completed the bags. They are now on sale at the
library for $3. They have lots of uses so let your friends know about them
and help publicize our library. Pat Jindra gets a special pat on the back
for spearheading this project and for silk screening the logo on the bags.
We have planned a "Luncheon is Served" money maker for Thursday,
September 25 at Murzyn Hall on Mill Street. Each of the Friends will be
asked to sell 5 tickets. The maximum we can acc°mmudate ii 150 guests.
The price will be11'$2o2~ and $2 for senior citizens. Lunch is at 12 noon.
There will be a very short program with the lunch. Talk it up to all of
your friends who like to Co out for lunch. This is a way they can also
help the Columbia Heights Libra'~y.
The September meeting will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, the 8th. Ple
Please come with suggestions for future projects for the Friends.

REPORT
August 5, 1980
The month of July showed a large number of materials in use and
a large amount of time being prograni~ed in the library. June circulation
figures were:
Adult ................... 5,142
Juvenile ................... 7,842
Book Bus ................... 473 (June 25th run only)
13,457
The classes sponsored by Community Education at the library
ended in July after offering a wide range of learning experiences to the
citizens. Guitar, silk flowers, Polish language, and calligraphy were some
of the selections offered in the library building.
Programming for crafts, K-6, was supervised by the Recreation
Department and held in the basement of the library. The Recreation Depart-
ment also set up a program of filmstrips in the parks and used equipment
and software from the library's collection. The Book Bus visited the parks
every Wednesday and had an unprecedented success, with over 500 materials
checked out each week. Jo and Bonnie accompanied the Bus on its rounds, and
participants in Jo's puppet workshop presented two programs on successive
weeks. The pet show drew a large crowd, and over sixty pets were registered
in various categories. A tarantula named Killer was given a wide berth by
the staff. Over twenty cats were entered, which was an increase over
previous years, and a two-week-old puppy of diverse ancestry stole several
hearts. Two movies, "Escape to Witch Mountain" and "The Abominable Dr.
Phibes", drew approximately 400 people who wanted a refuge from summer heat.
The Columbia Heights Fire Department helped present a second pre-school fire
safety program, and about fifteen children and their parents participated.
Thanks go to Gladyce Ballingrud, Connie Carlson, and Kathy Olson
for the Black Bottom cupcakes they baked for the July senior citizen program.
Becky attended the annual ALA conference in New York and brought
back many ideas. The conference presented an opportunity to examine a
selection of the new video equipment and to participate in workshops on
management and goal-setting. The exhibits were the best she had ever seen,
and the authors at the booths were charming and well-informed.
Bonnie Brantner, senior page and Book Bus assistant, has accepted
full-time employment with Micro-Control Company, The staff wishes her the
best of luck at her new job. Lotus Hubbard, evening supervisor substitute,
and her husband Richard are the proud parents of 8-pound, red-haired Ceili,
born July 28th. Congratulations from the staff.
