Report
July l, lgSO
The first month of summer has brought in many new patrons to the library.
There seem to be more people and materials than ever.
The children's department has started all of the scheduled summer programs,
and the response has been high. 277 are registered and ll9 pre-schoolers are
registered in the Read-to-Me club. The Puppet Players, a 4-week workshop
culminating in a puppet show, has attracted approximately fifteen participants,
and they will be entertaining at the parks as part of the Book Bus programs.
The Book Bus has taken its first run on the 25th of June, and by noon, over
200 items had been checked out. Jo and Bonnie will be on the Bus every Wednes-
day for the next seven weeks, and their trips will coincide with programs
scheduled at the parks on their route. Arrangements have also been made with
the Recreation Department for a filmstrip program to be held at the parks with
the equipment and software from the library and the leaders supplied by the
Recreation Department. Pre-school story hour has had between ¢0 and 55 in
attendance each week for the three-week run of the program. The Recreation
Department is using the library for its summer craft program, and the first
of three sessions has already been held. Ms. Sharon Hagen, local artist, is
teaching a ceramics class for beginners on the elementary age leve} on Mondays.
The pre-school fire safety program has drawn about 18 children and parents,
and the Fire Department has provided equipment and three experts to help in-
troduce pre-schoolers to "stop.drop-roll."
The Community Education classes being held at the library during the
sunnier include: Calligraphy, Tops and Bottoms for Sportswear, Silk Flowers,
Silk Flowers Centerpiecq Polish (two levels), and Guitar. These classes make
use of the four meeting room facilities available and help draw potential
patrons into the library.
The movie "Superman", shown on June 10, has drawn one of the largest
crowds ever to the library. Over 700 people viewed the Man of Steel at three
showings, in spite of some low-life character stealing the cardboard sign
advertising the movie from in front of the building.
Thanks go to Connie Caris~n, Helen Merrick, Dorothy Lindsey, and Ruth
ffiller for helping at the June senior citizen program and to Stephanie Rose,
Marcie Schlaeger, and Aileen Sturdevant for the coconut-chocolate cakes they
baked.
Bonnie Brantner, Patti Netkow, and Sue Skone, the top three pages at the
library, all graduated from Columbia Heights High School with the class of
1980. Bonnie is looking for lucrative employment, Patti has Joined the City
staff as a receptionist, and Sue will be attending Winona State University in
the fall. The staff wishes them the best as they start a new stage in their
lives.
