REPORT
June 3, 1980
The library staff uses the month of May to finish up old projects and
to prepare for su~er, which is full of programs and new projects. The
children's departments is decorated with some pretty strange-looking
characters, who are all ready to welcome summer readers to the Book Trek
Readinq Club. The shiny metal bodies and numerous bulbs and knobs look
formidable, but Jo assures everyone that they are all very friendly and.
love children. Jo and Darlene have visited the individual classrooms for
grades 1 through 3 in district thirteen to promote the summer proqrams,
and registrations have started to come in for some of the programs.
Thanks go to Marie Hansen, Helen Merrick, Ruth Miller, and Sue Murzyn
for the walnut cakes they baked for the May senior citizen program and to
Faye Kluk, Dorothy Lindsey, Ruth Miller, and Nancy Rathbun, who helped serve.
Mr. Abner Shivers, who formerly played guitar at the Grand Ole Opry in
Nashville, provided some special music as an addition to the regular program.
The library has received two donations in May. Mrs. Louise Johnson,
local nature author who uses the CHPL for her background research, has
donated a copy of her new book, Out~ost encounters, to the collection in
appreciation of the help she has received. Mrs. Faith Graefe and her
daughters have donated a copy of The signed English dictionary for preschool
and elementary levels to the childreh's department in a6pre'ciation of all
{h6 books they'have been able to read.
Each year brochures, bookmarks, and other public relations materials
have been solicited by the Public Relations Roundtable of ALA for use in a
program held during the annual conference. Materials from many libraries
are divided up according to subject and made available for distribution
during a program where consultants in different specialty fields may be
questioned about their areas of expertise. Mary and Jo have sent copies of
their brochures on homebounds, senior citizens, and get-well boxes to be
included in the program.
Becky attended the spring MLA conference in St. Cloud on May 2 and
participated in the trustee programs, which examined the relationship of
the library director and the trustee, performance evaluations, and powers
and limitations of different types of library boards. Becky also hosted
an informal meeting between the directors of the independent libraries in
MELSA (the regional library system) and Mr. William Duncan, the new MELSA
director. Discussion centered on the role of the independent libraries in
MELSA and the input they will have in the new policy on ~naffiliated
libraries. Jo and Darlene attended the spring MLA/Children's-Young People's
workshop at St. Catherine's with guest speakers Rosemary Wells and Norma
Klein. They also participated in a workshop on toy-lending libraries and
car back with possible ideas for expanded service, Jo and Becky also
visited Bookmen, the library's paperback supplier, and bought two carts full
of books for the start of the summer reading season.
