REPORT
March 4, 1980
February has passed quickly, but good news has been received. Circulation figures for
January are as follows:
1979 1980
Children 3,949 Children 5,042
Adult 5,589 Adult 5,679
Total 9,538 Total 10,721
This represents a 12.5% increase from 1979 and can probably be credited to three items: 1) the
pre-school "Read-to-me" reading club, 2) the gas shortage, and 3) inflation. It seems as if more
people are coming in to look for information on things to do at home (games, craft projects,
remodeling ideas, etc.) And for books which they usually would have purchased. A free service
has a lot of appeal at a time when people are cutting back on car use and spending.
The children's department enjoyed a busy month. The "Read-to-me" reading club had 98
children and parents signed up to participate and 74 have met the requirements for receiving an
invitation to a party the first week in March. A puppet show on the fifteenth has entertained over
150 children with productions of "The Fearful dragon", "The witch and the sorcerer", Winnie the
Pooh plants a garden" and "The Cookie Monster's Disguise". A workshop held on the eleventh
provided 75 children with the opportunity to create valentines of their own design.
Thanks go to Florence Bennek, Marg Roback, Pauline Rusinyak, and Judy Vircks for the
Country Fair Coffee cake they bakes for the February senior citizen program.
The library participated in the Columbia Heights Community Services Fair on February
7th and Nancy Rathbun and Aileen Sturdevant from the Friends helped Becky and Mary staff the
booth for the evening. The information available at all the booths was quite good, but as in
previous years, the attendance was not very high. The presence of many local political leaders,
school officials, and board/commission members was very supportive and greatly appreciated by
the groups represented in the booths.
The homebound service which has been discussed at various times in the past is getting
past the planning stages and is ready to start in March. Anyone with names of interested
potential patrons, should call the library at 788-3924
On February 23r°, Discount Records offered their library customers 40% off any item in their
store. Greed got the best of her, and Becky moved the March record buying date into February
to take advantage of the large discount. The 110 new records and 10 new cassettes are in the
process of getting ready to circulate.
