HomeMy WebLinkAboutFebruary 5, 1980Columbia Heights Public Library Report February 5, 1980 January is the traditional time for preparing the annual report, and this January has not been an exception. Mary and Becky have gathered and compiled all the pertinent data and have turned the completed items in to all the necessary people. One encouraging figure that emerged showed that actual books lost in 1979 had dropped almost 500 books from 1978's losses. A copy of the report will be available in the library for anyone who is interested. In the children's department, the after-school story hour proved to be a big success, with over 150 children participating in the three week program. The "Read-to-Me" reading club for preschoolers also drew a large response. Several day-care centers also visited the library for field trips during the month. Thanks go to Ruth Miller, Kathy Olson, Agnes Anderson, and JoAnn Nelson for the chocolate chip date cake they baked for the January senior citizen program. Mr. and Mrs. Gayle Norberh presented a slide show of their recent trip to Europe and put up a display of some of the items they brought back. Thanks for making the program a success. Ms. Judy Sjerven presented "America... This is your life," an evening of American history traced by slides and songs on January 30th. About 100 people turned out to listen to her excellent performance and to enjoy doughnuts and cider served by the Friends of the Library. Aileen Sturdevant, one of the Friends who helped, received a round of applause from the audience for plugging and unplugging the spotlight. She later commented that she had unplugged many things at home but she had never been applauded for it before. Thanks go to Faye Kluk, Rita Norberg, Diane Ocel, Kathy Olson, Kay Reinars, Marg Roback, and Aileen Sturdevant for their help during and after the performance. Judging by the voices displayed by the Friends during the sing-along sections of Ms. Sjerven's program, Becky thinks they will probably be forming a vocal group of some kind soon. Jo was invited to participate in a Hennepin County Library workshop on best children's books of the year. She got to see the Southdale branch and to share ideas with other children's librarians about the year's books. As a result, the library ordered several titles recommended by the group that were not already in the collection. Becky attended two planning sessions in conjunction with the Community Education Department's seminar, "Communicating: You, me and us." The library will help to order appropriate films for use in the programs on living and on getting along with yourself and others. Rising book prices are a fact of life for the 1980's, but the library is still buying books. A recent important acquisition was J.K. Lasser's Your income tax for 1979. The Columbia Heights Public Library Board of Trustees placed James Herriot's Yorkshire in the collection as a memorial for Mr. Harry Dedering, board member who passed away in 1979. The Board and staff also want to extend a welcome to Mrs. Nancy Hoium, who joined the Board for the first time at the January meeting.
