A cartoon festival on the day after Thanksgiving featured the new super 8mm cartoons purchased by the library and drew a crowd of approximately lO0 interested persons. Registration for Christmas Crafts was high and was taken through the end of November. The Friends, the library's adult volunteer group, had an organizational meeting on November 7, and discussion centered around the group's purpose. A need for structure was identified, and the following officers were chosen: Helen Merrick, President Pat Jindra, .Vice-President Kay Reiners, Secretary Faye Kluk, Treasurer The Friends will be meeting once a month at the library to discuss projects and plans. A workshop on policy/procedure manuals was held on November 8 at the library for librarians from A~IO (Associate Members of MELSA) libraries. Copies of policies were traded and discussed. The reference librarians from Anoka County Headquarters came on the 15th for a tour of the facilities and a chance to meet the staff, i~ames and voices known over the phone were matched with faces, and we all got a chance to trade ideas on improving back-up reference and ILL procedures. Jo and Becky met with representatives from the Fire Department and the Recreation/Community Services Department to discuss implementation of a fire safety program for pre-schoolers. A program for pre- schoolers and their parents will be included in either the winter or spring section of the library's story hour, and a trip to the fire station may be used as a follow-up reinforcement of what the children learn in the program. Plans for future cooperative efforts between the Recreation/Community Services Department and the library were also discussed, and possibilities were identified for development. The Guthrie Theatre's "Costumes on Stage" program was a roaring success. Nearly lO0 people crowded the community room to watch the costume show put on by volunteer models. Thanks go to Faye Kluk~ Helen Merrick, Nancy Rathbun, Marcie Schlager, and Ruth Westerberg for the pumpkin bars they baked and to Faye Kluk, Helen Merrick~ Ruth Miller, and Aileen Sturdevant for helping to serve and assisting with the show. In response to patron requests, the library will be ordering microfilm from the Chicago regional branch of the National Archives. Beginning in January, patrons may use microfilm of census records on an inter-library loan basis for their genealogical research. ~!,e library has ordered the necessary catalogs and forms and will be ready for the first requests sometime in January. Becky will be out of town December 19-29, and any questions can be directed to Mary during her absence. The staff joins in wishing everyone a happy holiday season. ~INTENANCE & REPAIR: Olson's Plumbing Sign Service, Inc.
