HomeMy WebLinkAboutNovember 6, 1979COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PUBLIC LIBRARY Report Movember 6, 1979 The Children's Department is initiating some new ideas this month. A "Poem of the Month" display on the bulletin board offers a hand-out of a different poem each month, and Jo is quite pleased with the response she is receiving. A monthly birthday sign-up sheet has also drawn a heavy response from the patrons. O~ October 29, "Dracula" starring Bela Lugosi was shown to over 3~0 children and adults at two showings. During Halloween week, the pre-school children from story hour {reared everyone (n the l(6rary to a parade which displayed their costumes. The staff has been busy attending workshops. On October 22, Alberta and Jo attended a MELSA-sponsored storytelling workshop featuring Caroline Feller Bauer. They are very enthusiastic about all the ideas they gathered there and are already working at implementing them. Alberta, Becky, Jo, and Mary all attended the annual Book Fair at the University of Minnesota and enjoyed looking at the new fall books and recommending some for purchase. The banquet speaker (Betty who wrote Summer of my German soldier) was a disappointment, but the chance to actually see the new books before purchasing them was great. BecKy attended a conference on the new edition of the An~lo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR II) and effective planning before they are implemented. AACR II, which will go into effect January, 1981, will make access to materials through the card cataloo more simplified for users. Becky a so had a chance to make a presentation to the Columbia Heights Golden Aoe Club on ~lovember 1. She gave a brief history of the library, which included pictures from many years back, and described programs and services offered by the library. Thanks go to Lois Carley, Viola Sowada, Gladys Spenny~ and Jane Polley for the treats they baked for the October senior citizen proqram. The library has been the recipient of a grant for a series of three proorams. l'he first will be on November 14 at 2'0~ p.m. durinq the regularly-scheduled senior citizens' program. The Guthrie Theatre's ':Costumes on Staqe" will be presented with a narrator explaining each costume, which will be vmrn by live models circulating through the audience. The program is open to the public, but ~servati~ns, (call 788-3924), are requested for anyone who is not on our mailing list. This pro~ram is supported jointly by a grant from the ~linnesota State Arts Board from funds appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature, and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Congratulations and thanks go to Mary for the excellent job she did on writing this grant. Laura Hutchinson has left the library staff because of time commitments. We all wish her the best and welcome Cyndy Acton as a new evening supervisor. The White House Conference on Library and Information Services will be held iqovember 15-19 in Washington, D.C. and libraries across the nation are showin~ their support by participatino in a "Be-with-a-book-for-a-day" program. Celebrities, such as President Carter and Elizabeth Taylor, picked their favorite books and are recommending them to others. The Columbia Heights Public Library has been polling local celebrities for their favorites and the results are posted on the library's bulletin board. Patrons are encouraoed to add their own favorites to the list and to pick up a "Be-with-a-book" sticker when they come in. The library suffered a great loss during October with the death of Mr. Harry Dedering. ~r. Dedering joined the Library Board of Trustees in July, 1973. He served as vice-president from 1974-1q76 and as president from January, 1976 to ?~ovember, 1978. Mr. Dedering was a very valuable Board member and his intelligent, thoughtful input will be missed. The Library Board of Trustees is presenting a memorial to the library in his honor.
