The Children's Department has been ~eartnm up for fall proarams this month.
The fall session of pre-school story hour will be starting the week of October
8 and registration is down slightly from last year. If the number of babies in
the library is any indication of a trend, story hour should have a huge boom in
about three years. Faith Academy, a local parochial school, sent a Qroup of
pre-schoolers to the library for a field trip in September. On October l, Joanne
Dustrude, a local high school student, entertained a large oroup of children with
a ventriloquist act featuring her friend "Carl." The high point of the month
came on September 27 when eight Hennepin County Library children's librarians
were the library's guests for a sharing workshop on puDpets and flannelboards.
There was a large exchange of ideas and a lot of laughing as everyone learned
new tricks and techniques for use in prooramming for their libraries. Jo
displayed flannelboards and puppets from the CHPL, and the other participants
brought boxes and bags full of flannelboards, props, and assorted goodies. Ruth
Harrts~ HCL's St. Anthony branch children's librarian, presented the library
with an apple-doll witch as a token of their appreciation for the chance to
share. The witch may be seen hanging above Jo's desk in the children's
department.
Thanks go to Diane Ocel, Joyce Peterson, Nancy Rathbun, and Loretta
Spindler for the Shenandoah Valley apple cakes they baked for the September
senior citizen meetinq.
The new sign for the library is up, and the accompanying lighting will be
installed soon. The letters are highly visible from the street and add to the
identification of the building as a library. The City crews will be removin~
the two old pole lights from the front lawn to improve the looks of the land-
scaping.
On September 6, Becky particiF'~ted 'in a workshop at Stillwater on book
ordering and book budgets. Six librarians shared their methods for selectino
and obtaining books and on keeping records for budgetine purposes. On September
21 Becky met with Helen Halverson from the Anoka County Library concerning
methods of collecting reference statistics. The LIBGIS method, which is used
by the MELSA libraries, was examined as a possibility, and Recky would like to
start using it as soon as some staff training can take place.
The library is co-sponsorinG a bus trip to the 0mnitheatre in St. Paul on
October 13. Registration fees include the bus fare and admission to the theatre
and the science museum. The bus will leave at ll:30 a.m. and there will be some
time to view the science exhibits before and after the show in the theatre.
Registration deadline is October g, so come in soon to make your reservations.
