Report
September 4, 1979
The month of August brought the end of summer programs for the children's
department. Everyone who completed at lea~t the min(mum requirements for reading
club was invited to a celebration picnic. Unfortunately, the weather did not co-
operate with Jo, and her oriqinal plans for a Lake George outing had to be changed
to a trip to Como Zoo and lunch followed by games back at the library. A record
159 children were invited out of 359 who originally joined, and the llO children
who actually went seemed to enjoy themselves immensely in spite of the rain. The
top readers for lg7g were:
Beginning: Dan Keller - 430 books
Advanced: Mike Johnston - 125 books
Special thanks go to all the many people who helped make the picnic a success.
Three weeks of preschool crafts also drew a good response, with about 40 children
each week. They painted metal cans; decorated silver tubes with stars and rick-
rack; and made aquariums out of paper plates. The movie, "Abbott and Costello
meet Frankenstein" was seen by 287 children, and Mel Brooks' "The Twelve Chairs"
was viewed by 33 adults on August 15.
Thanks to Pat Jindra, Bernice McDonald, and Mae Super for the zucchini bars
they baked for the August senior citizen meeting.
The Second Annual Unannounced, Unadvertized Book Sale was a grand event.
The announcements in the Post, the Sun, and the City's bulletin board brought many
people out to peruse the l'ibrary's discards and assorted donations. The pages
~;~joyed wheeling and dealing on prices for large quantity purchases, and the
weather gave us one day of sunshine and one of rain.
Due to many requests, the library acquired some out-of-state phone books.
The list included:
Chicago {white, yellow), Dallas (white), Las Veqas {white, yellow),
Los Angeles (white, yellow), Miami (white), New York (Bronx, Brooklyn,
Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, World Trade Area), Phoenix (white),
and St. Louis (white).
They may be used at the library during regularly scheduled hours.
Fall schedule will start the week of Labor Day, and the library will be open
on Saturdays from g a.m. to 1 p.m. starting September 8. Also, pre-registration
for fall preschool story hour will be taken starting September 4. Any Friends who
are interested in the workshop in Stillwater and who have not yet made a reservation
with Mary, are urged to call 788-3924 and make a reservation soon.
Becky would like to thank all the pages for the outstanding job they did for
the library this summer. They worked on many projects and deported themselves
well. We are looking forward to a productive year with them.
