HomeMy WebLinkAboutAugust 7, 1979COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT August 7, 1979 The "Superman-Superkid" summer schedule ofprograms drew large crowds ofenthusiastic young participants to the library in July. The crafts programs featured scrimshaw, link bracelets, mosaic coasters, and a whole range of items on pot-luck day. Annette Lausten, a volunteer at the Como Zoo, brought a screech owl and a wolf cub to one craft session and spoke to the kids about her job and the zoo. On July 28, Alberta and Bonnie accompanied 60 people on a bus trip to the New Zoo in Appl~ Valley. The zoo trip was a joint effort with the Fridley branch of ACL, and everyone seemed to enjoy the excursion. The film, "Jack and the Beanstalk" was shown twice on July 18, and the film, "Godspell" was shown in the evening in the commu ~ty room. Repairs to the building were multitudinous during the month. The air conditioning units in the lobby and the community room required some major repair during the hottest week of the summer. The units were restored to running order, and the thermostats were set up to 78 in conjunction with President Carter's energy policy. The drains and plumbing also suffered some problems, and one typewriter had a "frozen" motor. Other than that, things were fine. The installation of the folding doors in the basement activity room was accomplished very smoothly. The men installed them in only one morning, and the result was stunning because the wood-grain finish on the doors compliments the wood paneling behind the circulation desk. Todd will give the walls a fresh coat of paint, and Jo will do some re-arranging in time for fall story hour. In February the Library Board recommended that the identification of the building as a library be improved. After a great deal of inquiry, a proposal was drawn up, and'the City Countil approved it at the last Council Meeting. New letters and lighting will be purchased for the exterior of the building, and they will be in- stalled before September. Thanks to Connie Carlson, Jeanette Eaton, Joanne Nelson, and Kathy Olson for baking the "Carint-about-you carrot cake'' Used for 'th6 July Senior Citizen prOgram. Jo attended a city-sponsored workshop on the function of creativity in a job, and she picked up several new ideas. Bonnie finished the annual project of moving the older issues of the periodicals into the basement storage room and revising all the maps and records. Special thanks go to Alberta, Todd, Bonnie, Patti, and Mary for their aid and assistance on this project. Sue Skone observed her 18-month anni- versary with the library on July 27, and we all look forward to another year with Sue. Audrey and Dianne made quite a bit of progress on their newspaper project, and Sue progressed with her YP/YA project. After working on a special subject heading project all summer, JoAnn left for Europe, and we are all looking forward to a slide show on her return. Included with this month's report, you will find a sheet dealing with an all-state conference for Friends of the Library groups. Becky would like to see as many of the Friends go as possible, and group transportation will be arranged for those who are interested. Mary will be attending, and if you are interested in attending, please call the library at 788-3924, and we will make reservations as a group. The staff has some ideas for possible projects for 1980 for the Friends, and we see this conference as a chance to get organized.
