HomeMy WebLinkAboutJuly 3, 1979COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PUBLIC LIBRRARY REPORT July 3, 1979 The beginning of summer has brought more people than ever into the library. The "Superman-Superkid" Reading Club is enjoying a huge response from the kids, and the life-size Superman figure is lending his own excitement to the Krypton setting in the children's department. Crafts for all ages has also drawn a large response, with 138 children showing up one week to make storage containers out of the cans donated by Mr. Olson. The film "The Incredible Journey" has also been shown to 195 appreciative viewers of all ages. The long-awaited microfiche reader has arrived in the library. The old out-of-date copies of Anoka County Library's book catalog have been discarded, and the new microfiche edition is now available in the lobby. The use of the microfiche cataloQ will improve the accuracy of any inter-library loan transaction~ the library performs and will let the Columbia Heights Public Library patrons know what is currently available at Anoka Count.y L~brary. The paqes are workinq extra hours during the summer, and it is amazing how much work they can do! They are currently working on inventories, reorganizing the periodicals, compiling a scrapbook on Columbia Heights, organizing a file on the Columbia Heights Public Library, filing, and pulling discards/withdrawals. Mary has applied for a grant for a series of three programs to take place at the library in late fall of 1979. She has attended two workshops dealing with grants, and how to apply for them, and we are all hopeful of receiving some assistance, Alberta has attended a workshop on "Goofing off and other at-work activities" sponsored by the City in conjuction with the CETA training program. Becky has spent June 23-27 at the American Library Association national convention in Dallas, Texas, and has returned with all kinds of ideas about new equipment and materials. She also has been appointed to a committee on networking in the Small-Medium Sized Library Section of the public library division of ALA. The Committee will be working to see that librarians who cannot go to ALA from small- medium sized libraries still get any pertinent information, which is generated at the national level. Thanks go to: Florence Bennek Marg Roback Terry Stroncek for the chocolate-glazed cupcakes which they baked for the June Senior Citizen program. If any of you have recipes which you think wo~ld be good for this program, please share them with Mary at 788-3924. "The Tomb of Ligeia" has been shown as the first of a series of Summer Flicks at the Library. This series of movies will be s.hown on the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the community room at the library and are geared toward families and adults. Feel freef to bring your own treats and join us for "Godspell" on July 18 and "The Twelve Chairs" on August 15. The library was the unfortunate victim of a theft on June 5 when Jo discovered the loss of $170.00 in cash from a locked cabinet in the basement. The money belonged to children signed up for art and ceramic classes and was to go to the teachers for supplies. An insurance claim was filed, and thecity reimbursed the teachers for their loss. -2- Cary Griffith, one of the library's evening supervisors, has accepted a full, time position in the University of Minnesota's government documents section. We all wish him well in his career as a librarian. Laura Hutchinson is the library's new evening supervisor, and we all welcome her to the staff. Laura has worked in a special l~br~ry and is currently taking classes in librarianship at the University. Special recognition goes to Susan Skone, one of the library pages, and to Alberta Mrosla, the library's clerk-typist, for helping out with the children's programs in an emergency this month.
