HomeMy WebLinkAboutJune 5, 1979COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT June 5, 1979 The month of May presented many opportunities for the library staff to attend professional workshops in the area. Jo and Becky participated in the MEMO (Minnesota Educational Media Organization) Upper Mississippi Kaleidoscope conference held at the downtown Radisson. Becky saw the new video-discs demonstrated and got to play with an APPLE microcomputer while Jo gathered some new ideas on puppetry and acting for use with her programs. A new puppet, Mr. Twitter, was recruited to join the library staff, and in spite of being British and rather a masher, he settled in quickly. Mary attended a Gestetner equipment show held at Howard Wong's in Bloomington to get ideas on advances in duplicating technology and techniques in producing graphics. She also attended a booking workshop sponsored by the Minnesota State Arts Board at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and she got ideas on possible adult programming and how to obtain the necessary funding. Alberta participated in a CETA workshop directed by Bob Fierstad on "Effective Listening" and communications in a work situation. The library acquired a new Savin 755 plain-paper copier on May 29, and unlimited self-service copying will now be available to people. The library and the residents of the community are grateful to the City Council for allowing this copier to be purchased for use in the library. Jo conducted tours of the library for visiting groups of elementary students from the local public schools during the first two weeks of the month. Response was not as much as the staff had hoped because of a shortage of buses for transportation. Alberta and Jo went to all the elementary schools in Columbia Heights and visited each classroom of K-4 grades to tell the children about the "Superman-Superkid" reading club and other sumner activities at the library. Jo and Alberta also put on a series of puppet shows ("The Cookie Monster and the Cookie Tree," "The Three Pigs," "Ernie Cleans his Toy Shelf," "The Monster at the End of This Book," and "The Boy and the Girl and the Jelly Beans.") for a group of fifty attentive children and ten adults, and Alberta had her first experience as a talking cookie tree. The library showed the films "Ruth Stout's Garden" and "Bahamas 700" to the senior citizens in May. They were also treated to a crackers, cheese, and hot apple cider snack as a change from the usual dessert snack, and their response was tremendous. Mr. Gary Kobs donated a one-year subscription to Personal Computing magazine to the library and it will be available to patrons'of the library beginning in June. After serving as chore boy for nearly three years, Matt Field ended his career with the library on June first, and the staff wishes him well in his future endeavors. The staff also welcomes Todd Soderholm as the new chore boy. -~---.-~EIGHTS' PUBLIC ~LI~..~ .... . ..........- ......- June 5, 1979 OFFICE SUPPLIES: Gestetner Corp.
