Report
May l, 197g
The children's department welcomed spring by sponsoring a poster-slogan
contest in honor of National Library Week. Over 200 entries competed in different
divisions for prizes, and several potential advertising people were identified in
the Columbia Heights elementary schools. Jo also conducted four weeks of pre-
school story and crafts and had a marvelous response. A cartoon film festival,
shown on April 16, attracted many children for a post-Easter treat. Preparation
for summer programs was started, and we heard that we can expect a visit from a
mysterious stranger in a red cape for the reading club activities.
An open house was held in the adult reading room on April 4 in honor of
National Library Week. Seventy-five people signed up for the "mystery gift"
drawing and the winners were:
Mrs. Ruth Borris: a Linda Ronstadt album, "Don't cry now."
Mr. Fred Hay: a Rita Coolidge-Kris Kristofferson album,
"Together again."
Mrs. Roger Moe: a Barry Manilow album, "Greatest hits."
It was interesting to note that all three winners chose albums rather than books
from the selection of possible prizes. April 4 was also designated a "fine
free" day, and the library accepted any overdue books without either charging
fines or asking questions. Several very overdue books did come back, but most
were only a few days late.
Ms. Rena Vizenor, an employee of Northwestern Bell's Towntalkers program,
presented a talk entitled "Telephone tips for senior citizens" at the April
senior citizens program. The staff extends its thanks to the following Frien~~
for their mandarin orange cakes:
Lois Carley
Gladyce Ballingrud
Joyce Peterson
Aileen Sturdevant
The library sponsored a quilting workshop for three consecutive Wednes-
days in April. Taught by Helen Kelley of the Minnesota Quilters' Association,
the workshop taught 48 women the fundamentals of hand patchwork. This large
response indicated an interest in adult programs and will help the library in
planning future workshops and seminars.
The library staff participated in a time management study during the
month. The staff will be using the data collected to pinpoint areas for
development, rearrangement, and cut-backs.
Becky attended a workshop in Forest Lake on "The political entity:
how does a public library fit in?" Becky and Jo attended the spring MLA
Children and Young People's Section workshop at St. Catherine's on April 30.
Lillian Hoban, Marion Dane Bauer, and Theo Gilchrist, all children's authors,
were the main speakers during the program.
