REPORT
March 6, 1979
February was a short, busy month at the library. Mary and Becky worked
on getting the annual report ready and turned it in on time to the respective
agencies who wanted it. Circulation of library materials was down from 1977,
but the staff felt there were more requests for reference information than in
the previous year. The book collection rose to 37,379 volumes, which was an
increase of nearly 1,O00 from 1977, and the total physical collection increased
to 41,584 units. The number of registered borrowers also rose to 14,041, which
included 11,340 residents and 2,701MELSA borrowers. A total of $129,480 was
expended by the library for the operation of the building and all available
services.
Mary and Becky would like to thank the following Friends for baking
cakes for the February senior citizens' program:
Agnes Anderson
Diane Ocel
Janie Polley
Nancy Rathbun
In addition to showing the film "Forever Young, Forever Free" to
about 100 viewers, the children's department experienced a great adventure in
February. On the 8th, there was no heat in the basement, and the Minnegasco
serviceman assured us that the pilot light was lit but that no power was
reaching the furnace. The city crews spent the day searching for the break
but were unsuccessful. The next day Heights Electric located the problem: the
fan was moving so stiffly that it caused the motor to overheat and to blow the
circuit breaker. The city crews had to cut a hole in the wall in order to
reach the area which had to be serviced, and they replaced the unit for a very
reasonable cost. Heat and power were restored, and Jo and Marilyn put their
down parkas away.
The roof on the old section of the library continued its slow leak
with no major new disasters. The warmer temperatures let the excess water on
the roof run out through the scuppers, so hopefully not much water will come
into the library.
The library received two new stenographer's chairs this month: one
for upstairs and one for downstairs. They were replacemtns for some old ones
which were being held together with gum and band-aids.
The library also received the 1979 edition of the Thomas Register,
which contained listings of manufacturers by type of product, location, and
company names, and the first volume of the Time-Life Encyclopedia of
Collectibles, a new reference tool for popular collecting.
