HomeMy WebLinkAboutFebruary 6, 1979COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT February 6, 1979 In January Jo experimented with a new story hour for kindergarten children in the early afternoons. After a small beginning, it progressed to 15 children, and Jo was quite enthusiastic about their response. The regular pre-school story hour also started its winter session, and atten- dance was good. Jo was also working hard at planning her upcoming winter craft activities and special programs for older children. On January 22 Becky, Jo, and Mary attended a workshop sponsored by MELSA and the member libraries. The topic covered was the special and/or problem patron in the library, and a panel, comprised of a special services policeman, a psychiatrist, and a woman who worked with mentally retarded adults, made a presentation to the group. After the presentation, some questions from the floor were discussed, but by and large, the participation of the audience was limited. The topic was a good one which must be dealt with nearly every day in a public library, but we all felt the workshop was relatively ineffectual because no suggestions for actually dealing with these people were offered. On February l, Becky attended a meeting sponsored by the MELSA associate member libraries. Problem patrons, theft, participation in Captain Kangaroo's Picturepages, and leaky roofs were discussed in an informal session. The roof on the old section of the library sprang a leak in a dramatic fashion recently, and a massive configuration of ice forming near the back door caused water to flow down the foundation into the boiler room. The city crews came to the rescue and the situation was remedied, but these two items will need attention as the weather gets warmer. Mary and Becky represented the library in the second annual Community Services Fair sponsored by the local League of Women Voters on January 31. Held in the cafeteria of Central Junior High School, the fair featured twenty booths from service organizations in the community. The library picked up some good information from the other booths, but the attendance by citizens was sparse. Mrs. Maude Ella Duracha was a member of the first Columbia Heights Public Library Board of Trustees. She served as secretary for the Board and was the co-signer of the testimonial given to the 1928 Silver Lake School Mothers' Club by the Board in appreciation for their help in establishing the library. Mrs. Duracha passed away in January of this year, and her daughters, D. Eleanor DeLeo and Joan Nelson, gave the library a very generous bequest which was to be used to purchase materials in her memory. The library welcomed this opportunity to honor Mrs. Duracha and her service to the library, and we all wish to express our appreciation and thanks to her daughters for their gift.
