REPORT
December 5, 1978
On November 1, Becky attended a workshop on trends in acquisitions at the
Hennepin Technical Center. Not only was she impressed with the facilities, but
also with the content of the workshop. Shared acquisitions, automated acquisitions,
selection of legal materials for non-law libraries, and how to deal with gifts were
some of the topics covered during the day.
The children's department was busy during the month. The first session of
ended November 30 and will not resume until after the first
pre-school stor~ hour ..... ~ ~1° be held in December,~!nd no.

special programs for pre-school groups from Faith Nursery School and Woodcrest
Baptist Academy. Jo also bought eight new puppets for use with her programs.
The broken window in the rear of the library was repaired on the 20th. When
the glass was removed, the cold blasts of air almost froze the staff, but they
have all recovered.
The open house honoring fifty ?ears of library service in Columbia Heights
was a success. Over 120 people braved the snow and slippery streets to help the
staff celebrate. The Columbia Heights Swingers, a singing/dancing group of young
people from the high school, performed twice during the afternoon. The mayor of
Columbia Heights, the Honorable Bruce Nawrocki, re-dedicated the children's de-
partment to Miss Lucille Hawkins, who served the city as librarian for 34 years.
$45.25 was raised by Councilman Gayle Norberg when he auctioned off some sundry
items to those in attendance. A used booksale was sponsored by the Friends, who
also recruited new members for their group during the afternoon. The pages ran
lable in the library, and the
e,.,-~bits dealing with services and materials avai
evening supervisiors served refreshments. Congratulatory letters were received
from Mr. Jerry Young, director of the Anoka County Library and Mr. Dennis Shanley,
director of Anoka Public Library. It was a very pleasant afternoon in spite of the
weather, and Becky would like to express her thanks to all the staff and the
Friends for their help. Volunteers for organizing the 75th anniversary open
house will be taken in June, 2003, so call early to reserve a place on the planning
committee.
Two exhibits from the library's open house can still be viewed by the public.
Porcelain dolls .made by Ms. Sharon Hagen and her students can be seen in the
community room d~splay case, and a chronological, pictorial history of the library
can be seen on the bulletin boards. If you could not make it on December 3, these
two exhibits will be up during the coming month.
The library will be closed December 23, 24, and 25, so plan your holiday
book borrowing around these three dates.
The library staff wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
