Report as of April 1, 1973
The March circulation statistics are in and have set a new record-14,500 books were
circulated during March, 1973. This is the highest monthly figure the library has had except for
June. The remarkable increase in adult readers is gratifying.
The library received the third payment from the Children's Books antitrust litigation.
This last payment was $57.81 for a total of $295.00. This amount has been deposited with the
city in the capital outlay division of the budget. Part of this sum has been spent for the large
projection screen in the basement and the rest toward partitions and coat racks in the basement.
Mr. Young of the Anoka County Library has informed us that we will be getting a
quarterly payment of around $3,600.00 from MELSA this month. This amount should cushion
the increased circulation demands.
The new fine system seems to be a great success. The income from fines is just as great
as it was, possibly greater, and there are fewer small items to account for. Also, the relations
with parents of small children have improved and adults are more eager to return their books on
time. Maybe this relaxed atmosphere accounts for some of the increased circulation.
The Council has approved the hiring of a full-time circulation clerk after the first of
September.
Mrs. Shelley Roberts representing the relatives of Harry Zmuda, has donated $32.00 to
the library for hunting and fishing and outdoor books.
The librarian got infOrmal bids on card catalogs and Demco Educational Corporation had
the lowest bid-S654.00. As long as the capital outlay fund has enough money, it may be wise to
purchase the catalog this year (pending the Council's approval) as the present one is inadequate,
