Columbia Heights Public Library
Report - January 3, 1973
The New Year has started out with a pleasant surprise. The library
received checks for ~102.27 and $237.81 from litigation instituted by the
Attorney General of Minnesota against the publishers of children's books.
This rather seems like a Christmas present that is surely ~lcome.
The door to the basement is in and usable. The landscaping is not done
of course. Craft classes start next Wednesday afternoon so we will have an
opportunity to initiate it.
A sink is being installed in the large basement room for the use of
the craft classes. This should eliminate some of the traffic in the
storeroom area. The sink will be of the inexpensive laundry tub variety
and can be replaced in case more sophisticated facilities might be wanted
later. The plumbing was roughed in when the library was built.
New shelves have been installed in the children's room. None of the
non-fiction books seem to go out of date or use and new resources appear
every week so the shelves were getting pretty crowded. Technology is ad-
vancing for children even.
In a very helpful discussion with Mr. Young at the Anoka County Public
Library yesterday, some new procedures were worked out for interlibrary loan.
This service needs speeding up and some communication problems worked out.
The visit was very congenial, hr. Young remarked on the pleasant cooperatiSn
we have enjoyed between the libraries. He seemed to feel that we have hit
upon a good arrangement that gives good service to this end of the County.
We also worried together about the pressure that will be applied to the
State Legislature concerning a Metropolitan Library System, because of the
controversy between the Minneapolis Public Library and the Hennepim County
Library~ Anyone acquainted with the Representative or Senator from the
Columbia Heights Districts might discuss the question with them.
Despite the despicable December weather, the circulation figures were
higher in December, 1972 than December, 1971. It seemed very quiet to ~he
staff so we did many housekeeping cho~es. We also had many programs for
the children.
The City Clerk, Mr. Nielsen, has said that the book orders encumbered
in 1972 will be payable in 1973 so that this money in the book budget will
not be lost.
It's a new year and a new budget and we hope to provide the best possi-
ble service that we can.
