HomeMy WebLinkAboutSeptember 6, 1972Columbia Neights Public Library Report - September 6, 1972 School has begun and now we can review the summer's activities. One o~ %he mos~ gra~ifying statistics is that about the adult readers. Quite often there were as many adult books circulated as there were children's books. Our summer readers seemed quite satisfied with the collection. We had only si× requests for interlibrary loan. The last Monday ih August, there were over 8OO books checked out ~.~thout any special events to bring an unusual number to the library. 541 children enrolled in the reading program. Four of them read abou~ 200 books and received prizes. Seventy-two read more than fifty books and reported on them. Seventy-two received passes to the Heights Theatre donated by ~'~. Levy. A note of thanks was sent. An avers~e of 175 children attended three story hours weekly. Sixty-six boys and girls stuck it out all the way in puppet club, made their puppets and are now rehearsing for three puppet shows to be given this fall in the library. One of Miss ~o's "over and beyond the call of duties" was giving special attention to some slow readers in the neighborhood. She has been encouraging a seven-year-old, who flunked kindergarten, to learn his alphabet before at- tempting first grade. ~ considered the three free full-length movies a success and will try it again during the v~nter months° We surely don't want to compete with Mr. Levy. The Recreation Department had a disaster when the projector they had borrowed from the Fire Department broke down, so with a go. Samaritan attitude we lent them ours and Miss Jo to operate it--taking no chances with our own equipment. After all the craft programs were finished downstairs, Mark painted the basement washrooms. We almost fe*T as though we have recovered from the summer and are ready for ~nter.
