Report - September 14, 1971
While the children were getting ready to go back to school, the library
has been undergoing quite a heuse cleaning. Some painting and scrubbing has
brightened up some soiled places and we feel like we should have a pleasant
outlook this winter.
The sale of discarded and donated books netted $175.00 and with the dona-
tions received and the amount we saved doing cur own redecorating, there will
be some innovations in the children's room. Shelves covered in gay felt, car-
peting and some new bean-bag chairs will be added. The children should then
be pleased to confine their reading to the children's room and leave the adults
free to study.
The Anoka County Library director has proposed that they do some of the
book purchasing for Columbia Heights Library. They receive a 35% discount
rather than a 33% discount on trade nublic~tions. Columbia Heights Library will
be ordering about $8,OOO.OO or $9,000.00 worth of trade publications next year
and this would result in a saving of $160.OO. There would be some inconven-
iences and some added time invested, but there would be no charge for 1972,
anyway. The library feels some loyalty toward Monarch Book Co. for their won-
derful service during the years, but it would amount to closer cooperation with
the County. Some decision should be made before December.
The proposed budget was presented to the Council, but no definite deci-
sions were reached, partly because of the price and wage freeze.
The September 8m evening puppet show was very well attended and the adults
seemed to enjoy the program as much as the children.
School is open and classes are again coming to the library from ICS. The
first pre-school story hour was held this moxning. Senior Citizens program was
attended last week. Art Club will be starting soon and a Christmas Craft Class
on October 13~. We are back in the saddle again.
