Report - December 2, 1970
The library has enjoyed a volume of use this fall that is unprece-
dented. In accord with the pattern of use throughout the county and es-
pecially the Metropolitan area, the circulation figures, a rather inaccurate
measurement of use, have jumped over last year. November's figures were about
one thousand more volumes circuS&ted than last year.
The librarian aud President of the Board have been meeting ~ith officials
of the ~noka County Library System in an effort to come up with an agreement
that is workable and make it possible for the residents of Columbia Heights to
continue using the Minneapolis Public Library. An agreement has been proposed
and amended and is ready for board approval.
Three hundred and eighty-one residents of Columbia Iteights have applied
for cards at the Minneapolis Public Library and two hundred and ten ~nneapolis
residents have registered for the use of the Columbia Heights Public Library--
a difference of one hundred and seventy-one. This m~ans that the amount to be
paid to ~nneapolis will be at least $1,7OO.00. This amount is not due until
the first of January. Minneapolis Public Library extended the terms of the
contract from Octo~r 31, until December 31, 1970.
The library will be closed December 24,25, and 26~ to make up for the
holidays that the library was open during the year. This coincides more ~th
student and patron use of the library and inconveniences fewer people.
The children's librarian is planning a holiday program for the children
of the city between Christmas and New Years that will include some puppet
plays and films.
A Christmas craft class was held on Wednesday evenings at the library ~ith
about twenty women enrolled. An exciting, messy time was had by all. However
the enrollment fee covered the janitor service.
The staff is looking forward to an even busier time during January and
February so Happy New Year to you, too.

Columbia Heights Public Library
Report of 1970
The number of items used for 1970 was 135,935, an increase of 5,000 over
1969, The increase in use was due to the number of adult items borrowed from
the library. There was no increase in juvenile use. It is rewarding to know
that adults are making more use of the library, possibly because the adults
were introduced to the library by their children.
There were 1,634 new patrons registered in 1970. 789 of these were adults.
We now have 16,396 registered patrons accumulated during the last five years.
In 1970, we borrowed 146 books from other libraries for our patrons. In 1969,
we borrowed 295. Our collection would appear to be improving. Also, the ac-
cess to ~3kneapolis Public Library would be a great advantage.
2,833 new books were added to the collection during 1970, About 1,800 of
these were adult books. 624 were withdrawn during 1970. Of these, 182 were
lost or not returned.
On January ll, 1971, we made a tally of the people using the library for
a report to ~LSA. The results were:
Fromm: }JLinneapolis - 19
Anoka County - 20
Hennepin County - 1
R~msey County - 1
Columbia Heights - 266
It will be interesting to cheek tallies at the end of the year to see the
trend.
