HomeMy WebLinkAboutFebruary 1970Columbia Heights Public Library February-March Report March was a particularly busy month. The eighth grade students are doing 6he a~mual rrcountry" report ~d Mr. LaBlanc, the hockey ~d gymnastics coach from Columbia Junior High, is spending his evenings here at the library helping to keep things relaxed. He makes a real contribution to the library ~ interest ~d enthusiasm. Jo Scudder is going to spend the next three weeks recovering from surgery. We're hoping she'll be feeling A+ in time for summer programs. The Columbia Heights Garden Club spent their last $1OO for the library and we're hoping to have some evergreens planted by the patio in the back. We'll guard them carefully. We were delighted to play host for the Mayor's reception on Sunda~. The art exhibit from the Senior High certainly added to the attractiveness of the building. April promises to be even busier than March~ with classes from the public schools making their yearly visits to the library, library week celebrations, etc. Epsilon Sigma Alpha International sorority honored the librari~] for her contribution to the community. Possibly it should have been the other way The librarian, city manager, county commissioner, and other state offi- ci~?&s are meeting to consider a contract with Anoka County Library in regard to membership in ~LSA. The meeting is on the 22nd of April. The floor in the basement of the library is a thing of beauty! Now we can have puppet shows without chairs. There is a problem of maintenance but · , we're working on that. The ~aintenance contract service certainly leaves something to be de- sired. The cleaners hahitually push the dirt down the steps, shake the rugs by the desk and generally refrain from honoring the commitments of their contract. Also~ money is continually missing from the fine £und, unless we find more intricate places to hide it. They seem to forego cleaning in favor of hunting for the desk key. Too, they were caught using the copying machine. Complaints have been forwarded to the supervisor with no apparent results. As a result of a thorough examination at the Mayo Clinic, I find myself to be in remarkably good health with a slight back difficulty that I hope to have remedied with minor surgery. Maybe we'll all be in excellent shape by summer. Evidently the school libraries are be- ginning to come up to standard. Our pre-school and senior citizens programs are increasingly populist. In fact, another investment in a eof fee pot was made to meet the rising demand of the Senior Citizens. Plans for meeting the needs of the students doing work on their country projects are in oper~ation. We're trying to affect a positive attitude toward the group and keep an eye on our encyclopedias. The tiling of. the basement is being considered and shelves were built in the storeroom to make room for some of the older periodicals to relieve the space upstairs. We now have an accumulation of 22,579 books in the library. Our yearly circulation is about 131,OO0 books. There are 15,934 Columbia Heights people having library cards. 486 Fridley 144 Minneapolis 35 New Brighton 36 Hilltop 13 Other places So far 150 people from Columbia Heights have applied for cards at the Minnea- polis library. 96 Minneapolis people have go~ten cards at the Columbia tIeights Publi~ Library. 'April 12-18-m is Library Week and the art department at the High School has agoin agreed to have an s~t exhibit at the library. Jo has written a puppet show for the smaller ~hildren. LonE r~ge plans for the summer ~eading program are also in progress. Hurry up summer:
