MMK/jms TO: FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: M. Rebecca Loader, Library Director Marsha Tubbs, Children's Librarian February 29, 1996 February 1996 Operational Report T, .... as are heating up in the Children's Department. STORYTIME: The winter session began February 7. We have approximately 40 children registered for each of the two sessions. The response has been very favorable. Valentine's Day was a major highlight, thanks to Meredith Cable's Patsy Hoyt and her friend, Peter Rabbit. Two new bookprops made an appearance The cake that Mack ate (a soft sculpture cake with candles, corn, seeds, etc.), and a new story apron prop to accompany A hat for Minerva Louise. The last session was Dinosaur Day - another big hit topic. READING CLUB: Registration opened February 26, two days later we had 17 families registered and 25 children. I have become a believer in "All you have to do is ask". After making a number of phone calls requesting donations for prizes, we received four passes to the Children's Museum, two Omni-theater tickets, ten passes for four to Sports Spree, four passes to the Bell Museum, and promises of more to come. The Family Reading Club has been favorably received, most comments center around "It's nice to have a pdze option everyone can enjoy" and "Parents like to participate too". I LOVE TO READ MONTH: I love to read was celebrated in the local schools this month. Kelly Olson and I were both invited to read to elementary classes. We read to the kindergarten and first grade classes at Valley View on February 26. I read Fro.q.qy .qets dressed, and Kelly read Monkey soup. FAMILY NIGHT PROGRAMS: We began an experiment in programming this month. I scheduled eight weeks of Monday evening programs for family entertainment which began Monday, February 26. Author David LaRochelle began the series. If the weather had cooperated I think we would have had a better turn out. As it was, 18 people came to the program. The response was great. April programming will include a Kids 'N' Chemistry program (HB Fuller), Take Charge of Your TV (Meredith Cable), a Scavenger Hunt (in-house), and a Family Storytime (in-house). I had hoped to do a storytelling w,'-'-shop in conjunction with Jill Jungers, a local educator. Jill was unable to participate this year, but would like to give it .... o next year or maybe this Fall. INVENTORY: Kelly and I have progressed through G in the J Fiction inventory. I truly wish that the material codes, item #, and shelf locations would remain as cataloging first assigns them, but wishing will not make it so, the~:efore we are matching our entries to NTN's (assuming that collection would be the last to change). STAFF TRAINING: I conducted two sessions of training for the Pages on the subject of mending. These sessions were repeats/refreshers of the same material covered during their initial training. I attended a training session at City Hall on the Employee Assistance Program. The session, designed for supervisors, was very enlightening. I was pleased to discover that supervisors have a place to go for consultation and advice regarding employee work related problems. COI.LECTION: The Director and I met with sa!es-representa~ve Mary Kay Ulness on February, 23 to purchase books. It is always nice to meet the reps and see the books. MAT/k jo
