COLU?,~Ia HEIGHTS PUBLIC LIBRARY
February report
It is almost tempting the fates to say that with relenting of
winter, the students are again finding their way into the library. Feb-
~u~yW~ ~i~uta~i~n is es~ima~e~ a~ 10,000~ about the same as last year.
The people from Fridley and the administration of the Anoka County
Library are again seeking to negotiate a reciprocity agreement with the
Col. Hghts. Library with %he first few months as a testing period to find
out how many people would be crossing the borders. It is the present
position of the Library staff that this period might be very expensive
for the Columbia Heights Library because all of the evidence available
points to the fact that the residents of Fridley are much more anxious
to make use of the Columbia Heights Library that the people of Col. Hghts.
are to use the Anoka County Library. ~ith the possibility of an agree-
ment with the Minneapolis Libraries still hangin~ in the balance it does
not seem sensible to jeopardize the local position. I% would seem much
more desirable for the community of Columbia Heights to have an agree-
ment with Minneapolis. It seems advisable to stall for a while.
The street ~rew investigated the condition of the roof and opened
drains so that the roof on the old side of the library no longer leaks.
There seems to be the same accumulation of iDe and snow that everyone
has.
The volunteer boys have been keeping the cement cleared in front of
the building so that there is no great ac~umuiation of ice there but
the sidewalk is very slippery.
The metal working d~partment at the high school is making signs to
fasten to the gas lamps telling passersby about the library. Th~ only
expense will be some material°
Some of the gun class members meeting on Lionday nights have been
bringing their rifles into the library while waiting for their class.
~e are trying to find out why this is necessary°
Ue are preparing for Library Ueek in kpril expecting the usual
cooperation %~th the art department of the high school presenting
an art exhibit of their work.
Some action should be taken on a letter from Mr. Mac Donald,
the retiring librarian from the ~noka County System, regarding a
survey of the libraries in Anoka County. It seems an unnecessary
expenditure to me.
