JANUARY 1969
It is not possible at this time to provide a whole picture of the ac-
tivities of the library for 1968, as statistics are not all available
at this time. However, a detailed report should be ready in February.
One is able to state that the circulation of children's books is down
from 1968, and the adult readership has increased to some extent. It
seems reasonable that with the great improvement in schoot libraries,
the emphasis for the public library should be on pre-school children
and adult self-education. With this in mind, careful thought is being
given to the welfare of these grouts.
With the advent of a furious winter, some snow removal pr~btems have
· ome to the library, too. It might be advisable to consider the pur-
chase of a snow blower to keep the alley clear for our predominantly
women drivers. Both the mother's group and the Senior Citizens exper-
ienced difficulties in getting through the alley way.
Both the Anoka County library and the Minneapolis library have ¢onta~-
ted the Columbia Heights library in regards to a re¢ipricai ~ontract
concerning the use of their libraries by Columbia Heights residents,
and the use of Golumbia Heights library by their residents. There may
be some legal difficulties and an increase in service demand, but at
least it's nice to be wanted. Some consideration should be given this
matter.
Some precautions are being taken in hopes of forestalling th~ disappear-
ance of material during the "countries~' project of the eighth grade stu-
dents. %~e hope that thi~ year's crop will have more law abiding leaders,
but we also hope that a closer concentration of the material will make
for easier supervision.
it is ~nazing how many mothers and Senior Citizens keep mobile inspire
of great handicaps. Maybe February will be mild and some of our worries
will be unnecessary.
