The library has been typically quiet this Christmas time except for the
puppet programs put on by the staff. On the 20th of December, there were
well over 100 children and their parents watching the program especially
geered to the pre-school children. ~e grades from the parochial school were
invited during school hours to see the performance and a show is set for
December 27th at lO:OO A. M. Even without the pre-school children and others
having seen the progran, an overflow crowd is expected. Around 800 children
will have seen the progran.
A tape recorder has been purchased and it is a real contribution in
children's programs.
Preliminary work has been done toward organizing programs for the
Senior Citizens. Before anything substantial can be planned, black curtains
must be installed on the conference room windows. We anticipate starting
the program in February.
The librarian is registered for a graduate course in audio-visual for
the winter quarter to get ideas for improving our programs.
The pre-school sessions for the winter months are already fully sub-
scribed. Some of the Thursday morning folks have been asked to transfer to
other mornings because 45 pre-schoolers seem too many for one group. We
are thinking of again offering art classes for elementary school children
during the winter.
Paintings by the adult art classes are on display in the library.
The final accounting of the year will be furnished at the FebruarY
meeting.
We hope for a progressive and productive 1968.

COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PUBLIC LIBR~I,i~Y JAYUARY~FSBRUARY 1968
Under Title II of the Federal program for education, the parocllial
school has purchased quite a supply of library books au?.d are usizis this
library practically exclusively for the elementary grades. ~ley also
have acquired a librarian. Because of this factor it was expected that
the i)ubtic library's circulation would decline coilsiderably. The cir-
culatioii o£ children's books did decrease sol_lewhat, but the use of
adult books increased to the extent that this Ja~cuary's figures are
larger th~-u last January's, and February's will be near last years all
time high. It is {}ratifying to see the extent of use of the library
by adults.
The inaugerration of the Senior Citizen's prograill il~i the library
was either a great success or near disaster. ~bout twice as ~.ilany ca~.le
as were expected~ the coffee pot went dry, the cupcakes were exhausted,
said the projector broke do~el in the l~liddle of the last film. However,
everyone was content to visit said discuss future programs and proli~ised
to come back next ~ioilth,
One couple that attended t!ie Senior Citizen's program came back
the next week to get more books, brought their daughter to get books,
a~d ezirolled their grandchild i~! ~lext fall's pre-sctlool story hour.
Since then, the Mrs. JC's sa'inounced a gift of ~85 toward the
Senior Citizeii progr~ii ~!d on tile strength of this, a new projector was
ordered. A special price was given us on the strength of our frieiid-
ship with the ~'~udio Visual supervisor at the high scllool. A tiny
£ill~strip projector has been purchased for showing stories to the pre-
school ctiildren.
Plslis .are underway for the art exhibit durii'ig Library Week. Mr.
Rasl-lusseli fro~l tile high school is helpir~g coordiiiate the exhibit.
Enough ~loney was received during our csi~ipaign cz! fine delin-
quency to more th~ repay our efforts. Also see~iied to make people
more coriscious of overdue books.
