HomeMy WebLinkAboutSeptember 1966COLUMBIA HEIGHTS PUBLIC LIBRARY SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 1966 In spit.e of ha}~ng the library closed for several days during const~tction, the Septe?nber circulation exceeded that of September a year ago. It is a little early to predict that of Octob~r because it may be necessary to close the adult section for carpeting and shelving, but things are just busier than ever. The 9re-school story hour began on October 12th and was an immediate success. The participa:~ts ~mre limited to ages ~9 to 5 year ells and about twenty w,,re registered and enrolled, The mothers m~t at the same time i~ the lounge section of the adult side sc the library. The librarian discussed the proceedures for t gory hour at the first session, ~nd at the ~;econd session ga'~e a ~ery brief presentation on children's books, The mothers and children were very appr.:ciative and interested. ,lbout ten ap ii- cations have been received from parents hoping for another session of pre-school sbories on Thursdays and this '~_ll be under- taken as soon as Librar7 Dedication is over. The librarian was invited to speak to the homemaking classes at Central Junior Iligh on books appropriate for baby sitting. The talks were well receive~ ~ud the students sent letters back of commendation. Ye also ~ot some hints from them for our programs at story hour. The first we~=k of Nove~n~cr is Bock ~ieek ~d some plums are already underway, imnouncement3 have been posted of a contest for illus- trations of a favorite ~tory book. The Mrs. Jaycees contr~ x~ted ~153,7.5 for use of the library and it was thoug ,t most ap roll"Sate to use this ,~oney for the plaque cor~memorating the Luci].~e Hawkins Children's Room. This organization ~lso plans to hold its ~.~xt regular meeting in the conference room of the library for a library oriented discu~sion.
