GOLUr-~IA H~IGHiS PUDLIC LIBRARY
July & .Au~ust 1966
August, which is usually one of the quietest months at the Librar-j,
has set a new circulation record. There were over 13,300 books circula-
ted durins: August. This is over 1,000 more than last June, ~.:hich is
al,~qys the busiest month of the year. We are anticipating a very busy
~teP with the ~tuden~s. July was 1,000 more than July a year ago and
;~.agus% was 4,000 more than August 1965.
There has been 176 new patrons registered since the move ~o the
new ~uarters was made on July 16m. Many people have Just now heard
~hat ~here is a library in Columbia ~el~ts and some of these people
have neve? been to a library before.
Mrs. Franklyn found it necessary to move to a different location
~u~d rather abruptly discontinued her services at the library. }~ss Joann
:~udder has been hired as a full time assistant in her stead. Miss
;~:udder is a life long resident of Columbia Heights. She h~ .worked for
years at the 0olumbia Heights State Bank whePe she wa~ supervisor of
~he IBM department. She comes to us well recommended and is particularly
'~elcome at this time when the staff seems to require some stabilization.
attended Augsburg College for two 'years and took classes in elemen-
~ary education. She is happy at the opportunity to work with children
will be in charge of the Story IIour activities when the room is
~eady in the fall.
Because of the delay in w~u~ch the book orders are being filled,
~here may b,; some difficulty in the billing and payment of invoices.
It may be necessary to hold an e~tra Library Board m :sting to take care
of the yes~end balances. Three sets of encyclopedias have been ordered
and received. The sets that were in the library were at least ? years
old and some of them 15 years old. The older sets may be used in the
Juvenile collection. Ten more periodicals have been added to the list
that the library stocks.
%4its a long list of unpaid fines outstanding at the library, it
was dec~.ded that some action would be taken in the n~me of justice.
Form le=ters were mailed to the people owing ?~¢ or more, informing
them o! the amount and requesting that t':ese fines be settle~ before
renewing their library cards. About $~.00 in postage was in%'ested and
a ret,~rn of $14.70 was realized. There may have been some educational
benefits derived from '~he procedure and those that had moved from the
coma, miry, leaving no forwarding address, were cancelled from the list.
The hook drop that was installed in the new construction seems to have
kep~ down the number of overdue books° Keepins track of overdue books
is time and money consuming and fines barely pay for the time and posta~e~
975 of the books deposited in the book drop are not overdue. We feel
t:~at this one convenience alone has been of great sera. ce to the public.
Now we are lookin~ forward to the completion of the library that
the architect promises for next month, and a sl..len~:id open house.
