April 29, 1965
In spite of, or maybe because of, the intemperate weather in March there was a record
circulation for the library. Over 10,000 books were used during the month. This is the largest
circulation of any month except last June. April evidently is a sweep toward, shovel out, and
mop up month with a projected circulation of about 9,000 books used. There has been a
noticeable change in the attitude of the patrons. Whereas before they were delighted if we could
find them any material at all now they are mildly surprised to find that there are a few books that
we do not have. We hope to overcome this frustration with a steady building up of the collection
especially in the adult nonfiction section. The facilities of the State Library are being used
continually. There is never a day goes by that at least one book is ordered from the State
Library. The greatly enlarged service is appreciated by the patron.
The summer reading program is now organized and it will be necessary to recruit some
additional help for this expanded program. Booklets will given to the people enrolling; in these,
the folks will keep track of the books that they have read and will report on them. When they
have reported on 10 books, they will be entitled to a button making them a member of the
Columbia Heights Library Reading Club.
The Girl Scouts and other Junior High young people are volunteering to donate their time
to the library this summer. This help requires considerable supervision but is a productive
activity.
This week two groups of third graders are visiting the library from Oakwood school.
Other groups will be visiting later in May. It will be wonderful to have the special room for this
in the new addition. The librarian will be visiting the grade schools to invite the children to take
part in the summer reading program.
The librarian's class at the University will probably be making a visit to the library to
view the collections and make constructive suggestions. We believe that this will be of benefit,
something like a free survey.
We all are taking vitamins in anticipation of a busy summer.
H. Deeble, Librarian.
