Xn June the shelves in the childre~'e department were all but bare and ~e invested several hundred dollars in picture books · o that the patrons ~uld~t be die~ppointed, For the next several ~oaths ~ plan on concentrat~g on non-fiction reference ~mks to build up the history and social science sections, Over 700 children jolaed the miner rea,ling program end the end of June, lS~ had alread~ received certificates for pleti~ tea books, We ran out of all ~ateriml at ~00 end havea't ~ade a count since to detel~Lue the final nua~er, A aev set of shelves for the ~efemmee depaw~ent had to be purchased, ThAs ~ put our budget in the red for furniture and equipaent, ~weyer the budget ~as top hear2 in the ~upp~y lte~ ~ that the a~unt ~_ be covered. T~o high schooX mmiore have been hired to take over Douglas' tasks and to gave us additional help un ~oada~s end ~vensk~eaane ~oodfill, ~aadra Welshinger, and Jeanne ~Joaelius have beea co~tributing voluntee~ help ~hen possible. ~he proble~ ef overdue hooka atill coafronts u~, The frustation of replacing books that should be returned ~s a~q~at~ug. The to,al was t2,110, .... rhich averages out to ~50 '~er day. For the first six months of 19dh the tot~l is 5~'.,[~69 which may send us over 100,000 for the year. It is certainly gratying to have so m~y people acquainted] ~ith the fac~.lities. ?sere are ~50 new ~atrons of tqe library since June lat. In June the shelves in 'the children's department were all but bare and we invested several hundred dollars in [cicture books so that the patrons wouldn't be disa]{~pointed. ?or the next several months we plato on concentrating on non-fiction reference books to build up the history crud social science sections. The frustatiom of replac~n~ mocks that s:'.ould b,:~ returned is ex- asperating. The problem is universal, thou~/h, and probably no worse here than anywhere. No action seems dras~..ic enough.
