The May circulation for t;.~e library was somewhat dioafpoint-
lng, ~o which wa~ less than the x~,'
--~.... ~1 figure hut nearly a
thousand nbove ~he ~,; y 1965 fi ure. ~iowew:~-, in June we hit a
deluge. The to,al was t2,110, .... rhich averages out to ~50 '~er day.
For the first six months of 19dh the tot~l is 5~'.,[~69 which may
send us over 100,000 for the year. It is certainly gratying to
have so m~y people acquainted] ~ith the fac~.lities.
?sere are ~50 new ~atrons of tqe library since June lat.
In June the shelves in 'the children's department were all
but bare and we invested several hundred dollars in [cicture books
so that the patrons wouldn't be disa]{~pointed. ?or the next
several months we plato on concentrating on non-fiction reference
books to build up the history crud social science sections.
Over ?00 c~;ildren joined -!fie su~mer rea.~ng program, and by
the end of June 185 had e~!rea~]y received certificates for com-
pleting ten socks. '../e ran out of all mater~al at 700 ~d havep't
made a. count since to deter~.ine lhe final humbler.
A new set of shelves for the reference ~epartment had to be
purchased. This '.:ill put our b~dget in the red for furniture
~md equip:~ent. However the budget was 'to~ heavy in the supply
item rso that the amount will l~e :overed.
Two high sci~_ool seniors have been !.ired to t~die over Mrs.
Douglas' tasks and to give us additional ]:el? on Mondays smd
Fridays. Becky Buch~nan, Dice_ne Lundeen, J~net ~osenthal, Linde
Svensk, Lea~_~ne ~oodfill, ,mhd Jemnne Jjoselius have been contri-
buting volu.nteer help wi~en~'~ss~~.~
2~ne pro~)lem of over ]ue books still confronts us. The
frustatiom of replac~n~ mocks that s:'.ould b,:~ returned is ex-
asperating. The problem is universal, thou~/h, and probably no
worse here than anywhere. No action seems dras~..ic enough.
In all it has. been a w-:~rj 0.~sy nnq ?ieas;=it summer.
