· ~hereas, Auoka.Oounty has an emergency relief case load of 236 of which number 157
are employable and which costs the County $7000.00 per month and is steadily increasing,
and
Whereas, of the above case load a major portion consists of residents of Columbia
Heights, and
Whereas, Anoka County has heretofore issued bonds for the sum of $~0,000.00 to care
for its relief needs, and the 1936 tax levy, parable in 1957, for emergency relief and
assistance is 17 mills on every dollar of assessed valuation in this County, and that
our relief and 01d Age Assistance funds are completely exhausted, and
Whereas, the total tax levy in some portions of this County is now 148 mills and it
is our opinion that an~ additional tax levy for relief purposes would cause a very
serious reduction in the amount of taxes collected and in ma~ cases would amount to
confiscation of the property of our citizens,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLUMBIA HEIGHTS,
Anoka 0ounty, Minnesota, that the Federal Government and the State of Minnesota take
immediate steps to:
(1) Furnish work for the employable persons now on relief and to appropriate a
major part, if not all, of the funds necessary to carry on the relief needs of this
County and City during the years 1957 and 1938.
(2) Furnish the City of Colunfola Heights, Anoka ~ounty, Minnesota with one full
time relief investigator.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the 0ity of Minneapolis be requested to supply the
necessary funds to pa~ the wages of BOO W. P. A. workers whose wages are now being
paid out of federal funds allotted to the County of Anoka, and
That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the Board of Public Welfare of the
City of Minneapolis to federal and state relief officials.#
