HomeMy WebLinkAboutDec 17, 1979 (3)MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE
COLUMBIA HEIGHTS FIRE DEPARTMENT RELIEF
ASSOCIATION, VOLUNTEER DIVISION
DECEMBER 17, 1979
The meeting was called to order at 10:55 p.m.
Roll Call: Logacz, Heintz, Norberg, Hentges, Nawrocki - Present
Also present were Fire Chief Don Johnson, City Manager Bob Bocwinski, -
Administrative Assistant Tim Yantos, and Finance Director John Schedler.
PURPOSE OF MEETING
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the matter of pensions with the
retired members of the department as well as the active volunteers. Harold
Ostmoe stated the last time they met they were asked by the Council to come
back with a proposal that would be for both groups, the retired volunteers
and the present volunteers. Discussion followed on the death benefit for
Gordon Rongrud and which fund it would come from.
Discussion continued on who was included in the increased pension, when the
pension would become effective under the proposed plan, how much catching up
the City should do on the pension for the retired volunteers.
City Attorney Kalina stated that the question of whether an increase could be
given to already retired volunteers has been forwarded to the Attorney
General's office. Under the present law, the Council doesn't have the power
to raise the pensions of people who are currently retired, but could grant
increases to people who are currently active. Legislation has been prepared
for the next session which would either allow this or not. He stated the
Council could be in legal trouble if it acted in favor of the retired volunteers
at this time.
Discussion continued on the definition of disability and the volunteers asked
for a change in this part of their by laws, The City Manager stated that a
change in the definition of disability will make a change in the actuarial
report. The Mayor suggested continuing this matter until additional information
can be obtained from the actuary on what this would do to the plan and the City
Attorney can check on the language change.
Discussion continued on the widow's benefits, present and proposed.
