A high percentage of these chi].d:en become captains of their specific school patroZs. The P.T.A. 's ~rom participating schools paid the $30 fee per school pat:roi. September 24, 25 and 26, 1975, Sst. I4archir:iak presented the Annual. School Patrol. Installation and Safety Program. This in- volved six separate sessions at our five schools. In front of 2,766 pupils, 2]_2 boys and girls took the o-nth of the school patrols. ~ooperation between }2, upi! and patrol %,,~as stressed. Safety pamphlets were di,~tributed and a presentation was macle on the hazards of talking to shranger.n. BICYCLE AN~D PEDESTRIAN SAFETY REPORT - YEAR 1975 Due to the vast increases in traffic 'and the accompanying hazards and the increasing numbers of bicyclists and pedest, rians involved in mishaps, the Police Depar-kment con'~uc~-s campaigns to properly instruct cNi]idren (at the grade school ],eve]) in the rudiments of safety. The program is under the direction-of Sergeant John Mar-- chiniak. The director of this program also keeps current records of stolen and recovered bicycles to insure all efforts are made to see that such property is recovered by the. rightful, o~,,,ner. Semi-ar~ually, lists of stolen and. recovered bikes arc sent to twen'ky-'three po:Lice · deparim~en{:.s in our surrounding area~. This is r:v,~-,'.::aal!y beneficial to al}_ departme.~ts. April 12, 1975 an auction ~?as held to dispose of the !974 unclaimed property of this nature for which the owners cannot be identified or loca~,"ed. Receipts cf $575.50 were received. On January 8, 1.975 Sgt. P.~archiniak spoke to ~,pproximately fifty cub scouts and their parents at the Cen{u.'a! Jr. Nigh Schocl on the snb- jects of the roles of the policemen, their eq',~ipP.:er:t and also minor crimes; such as shoplifting, glue sniffing, etc. From May 12 th, rough 14, 1975, Sgt. Marchiniak conduc'ked the !3th Annual }~icycle Rodeo. This program is aimed at students on grades two throus~h six and ].05 students participated. Contestants demo-- strated their ability by riding th:or, gl] an obstacle course and finalists in contests were awarde{[ ribbcns. This program is spon- sored by our Police Depar~Gaent, School Board and Columbia Iicights Jaycecs. On May 22, 1975, all the ribbon finalists ef our si× schools com- peted against each other for 1st and 2nd place trophJ, es at the playground, of Highland School. The Sun Newspaper p~:blished the results. Assistance %~as given by our Jaycees. On May 27, 28 and 29, 1975, a bicycle safety program was presented in conjunc'tion with school patrol av~ards at all six elementary schoo_].s. This was accomplished in six sessions before 2,792 students and. consisted, of lectures plus a film stressing safety in walking and in riding bicycles. Columbia Heights bicycle and pedestrian accidents since the st~]rt of the school year in 1974 were discussed. This pro- gram is repeated in the fall with the School Patrol. Installation Pro- grams. In the fall of 1975, 1700 hundred "Safety Ways" booklets were dis- tributed to all grade schools. These booklets relate in pictures and words recommended safety procedures. The booklets were presented through the courtesy of local business men. On December 19, 1975, Sgt. Marchiniak spoke to the: 12th grade High School social Studies Class on crime, juvenile law, traffic and the police role in the community.
